Does anyone have a comfortable mastectomy bra that they would recommend?? I'm presently wearing one that hooks in the front, and keeps coming unhooked because the bra straps slip off my shoulders!!
Very irritating!!

Thanks in advance for any replies!!

None of mine hook in front.
None of mine hook in front. I like my underwires the best - always liked underwires.
I have a mastectomy 'sports bra' that hooks both front and back - absolutely HATE it. The only thing it's good for is compression at night when Lymephedema is bad in chest area (haven't worn it since I got my MLD). My Lymphedemologist insisted on ordering it, so he did - the side with my pros. looks decent but side with natural is squashed flatter than a pancake - HATE it (other than for compression) and have never worn it out of the house - nor will I ever. Some of my bras are from/through a local health supply place (VA sends the PO there and I just order) but the ones I like the best I ordered through JC Penney's (paid for myself). The BC Navigator at the Center I went to gave me the name of one of the women that works there, she's is GREAT.

Thing is to find a fitter that will listen to you - not what others have supposedly said - and try different ones til you find what is right for you.

Good luck - there is/are some that will be right for you.

    Bras
    Hi Linda!

Have you gone somewhere to be fitted for a bra? I don't have any that fasten in front. I was refered to a place that has all kinds of things for us ladies with bc and was fitted for one. I actually was able to get a bra that fitted me correctly, something that had never happened before! And it's the first ones I got that I seem to like the best. They are an underwire and no padding. I do have several with padding for tee shirts but the others fit better. Look in the yellow pages for a place that cater to women like us or ask your doctor if they know of a place. My insurance pays for part of the expense ( sort of an added bonus as I had to buy bras in the first place!) Good luck.

    Depends on where you live.
Depends on where you live. There are no listings in the yellow pages (at least the last time I looked) here for mastectomy 'stuff'. The closest store that have ads are 300+ miles away. The first person I went to at the med. supply place is the only certified fitter within 300 miles. The lady at Penney's is better in my opinion but is not certified.

Here are another few options for you .. submitted by

    ==========================

Before breast cancer I didn't know fruit of the loom from freya bras. Not only has this last year and a half been a crash course in breast cancer, I've also learned a ton about bras.

    Here is what I know:
If you have a Nordstrom's nearby, make an appointment and ask for a 'surgical fitter.' They are specially trained at Nordstrom's and they are a huge resource for us! As there are different of breast cancers, so we have different needs in bras for reconstructed breasts. Some of us need lateral support, some of us the foobs need separation in the middle. What is it you need? For most of us, we need REALLY good lateral support because the implants tend to want to drift to the armpits. Some PS's don't want you want to wear an underwire for three months after the exchange, some insist upon an underwire right after the exchange. They're all different. Some of us have short a short distance between our shoulder and foob and others of us need longer straps. So ... know all of that as I suggest a few bras.

We all need good support at the bottom because gravity is not our friend. I've found the Freya bras work really well for me, especially the Eleanor, Arabella and Pollyana. Unfortunately, the Eleanor has been discontinued! :( Yes, just like our favorite lipsticks and mascara.

Wacoal, Chantelle, Natori are all really good. I've found for my new foobs, Victoria Secret bras do not give me the lateral support that I need. Yes, these bras are more expensive but they are expensive for a reason ... the underwires and the materials are better quality and last longer.

My favorite work-out bras are the Bendon Max Out Bra and the Lululemon TaTa Tamer. They keep the girls in place with no lateral movement. Herroom and Barenecessities are good places to order from online. They have good return policies too. Know that finding the perfect bra takes TIME! I've returned so many bras thus far it's unbelievable. I'll post a few links to some of my favorites bras.

Do either go to Nordstroms (I had to travel 2.5 hours to the nearest one) or a masectomy store with an experienced fitter. Again, they will guide you to the bras you need. Note that you're probably going to be a larger cup size even if you don't have the projection of your natural breasts because implants are wider than natural breasts.

Best of luck finding what works. Breast cancer has opened up a whole new world for me re bras I never knew existed. :)
