Had my thyroid biopsy today

Friends,

Finally had my thyroid nodule biopsy today. The surgeon ordered for two nodules to be biopsied but the radiologist doing the procedure said that she was only going to do one. She said the other was too small to do, and the third was a clear cyst (doc didn't want that want biopsied either). I mentioned surgeon specifically ordered the two solid nodules to be biopsied and she insisted just the one, and that she would put it in her report to him. Hmmmmm????

Anyway, it was ok, not a lot of fun. They gave me a lidocaine shot first, and then did the biopsy. Even with the shot it kind of hurt as they moved needle around and stuff. It took two passes into the nodule to get their sample. Sure glad that test is over and I am back home. They tell you to just take it easy the rest of the day and no lifting.

I am to get the results mid next week.

Fingers crossed for benign results.

Hugs,
Cindy

    No fun!
    Hi Cindy,
You certainly didn't have an easy time of it. Now the wait. It really bugs me that they don't treat you like an educated consumer. You went in requesting what your other physician wanted and then the other doctor said no only will do one. I wonder what they would have done if you said..since you two docs have a difference of opinion then get the other doc on the phone and I want to listen to you discuss my situation.
After having cance any lump or swelling freaks us out. Keeping you in my prayers for benign results.

    Thanks Lori.

Well, the surgeon put the order in for her radiologist to biopsy the two nodules, so she was well aware of what the doc ordered.

    I questioned it as well.

But the surgeon knows thyroids and knows what he wants so I find it difficult to believe he would want radiologist changing his order.

    Well, we'll see.

I know what you mean. I would think she would page him and ask, maybe she did and I was not aware. There were some other issues as well-mistakes made.

I will just keep my fingers crossed is benign.

    Thank you for your prayers.

It's gonna be benign; try not to worry.
I believe it will be benign. But if it isn't, the tissue from the needle biopsy does give you an opportunity to have an assay done (for ER/PR and Her2) if they rooted around in there good enough (and by your description it sounds like they did) to get a decent tissue amount.

I'm glad the test is over for you. Keep us posted and take it easy for the next couple of days. (((hugs)))

    Tests! Tests! Tests!
You did well. Waiting for results is such a pain. I try to put it out of my mind and focus on the day. I know it's easier said than done. Sometimes when they mention another test I just cringe. I know they have to "rule out" but that leaves us looking like a pin cushion. I know you know we're here for you. Love,

    Test
    Friends,

I sure hope it is benign. If it isn't, is would most probably be a different cancer as I was told that uterine cancer does not spread to the thyroid.

The test was not fun. A few mistakes were made also:

The radiologist whad advised me that after she gave me the lidocaine shot she would poke me with needle and ask if I felt it, then tell me she would start biopsy. Well, she forgot and just started the biopsy. At first I didn't feel the needle (later I did) and so I spoke while they were in my neck with the needle, which is very dangerous. You are not supposed to speak or swallow. They panicked and told me not to swallow or speak until they told me to. When they said I could, I asked if any damage was done (it was ultrasound guided) and they didn't answer me. I asked again and they kind of hesitated and said it was ok. They said if you talk or swallow the nodule goes up and down and they lose sight of the needle. I had already been warned that the risks of the test are systemic body infection or hematoma, and you have to sign a release form. They also told me they are right by your windpipe and carteroid arteries. So that was a major error on the radiologist's part, which should be just routine and automatic.

Also when they did the "second pass" on the nodule, which means sticking the needle in second time, the 2nd radiologist told the radiologist doing it to go in a different way so she would not be going over or around my windpipe so much like the first time. I was laying there silently panicking thinking what are you ladies doing to me?

They also forgot to measure the left side of my thyroid when they did the ultrasound so after the biopsy was done, and they have you wait 30 minutes before you leave because of risk of, hematoma, somebody else called me back in and told me that had to re-ultrasound left side of my neck because the one forgot.

Also, I was supposed to have my two solid nodules biopsied, and the radiologis said she was only going to do the one, because the other was considered too small. I certainly hope this is ok with the thyroid surgeon.

Needless to say, it was not a fun afternoon.

Anyway, thank you for your encouragement, and prayers and I appreciate your support.

We are all in these tests and fears together! :)

    TESTS
    Hi Cindy,
I am so happy it is over. I am so sorry that you had a hard time. I know how hard the waiting is . It always seems that all we do is get tests and then wait and wait and worry. Then you know what? We have more tests and wait again!!
I am confident it is benign. I love when one doc says biopsy 2 then they only biopsy one. Probaly it was so small that they could not get a biopsy of it.
Keep us informed. I am looking foward to a post from you that just says BENIGN!!!
