Hi Everyone Im off and on this site and everyone has been such an inspiration. My father was diagnosed almost 2 years ago with stage 4 colon cancer. Today we were told he has 5 nodules in the lungs. Course of action they want to take is 5fu and cbt11. Does anyone have experience with this?

CPT 11 is irinotecan or also named Camptosar, very powerful drug, in my case a successful one in combo with Avastin.

My hubby is on CPT-11 weekly adding Avastin every 3rd treatment. Side effects he has experienced (he has only had 3 infusions so far) hair loss about 80%, mild diarrhea but some do experience more so be prepared with Imodium AD and keep him hydrated, fatigue, just plain tired.

George had 5FU and Leucovorin in the past and didn't really experience any side effects from them.

Is your dad also getting Avastin?

Take care - Tina

I am sorry to hear of these new spots, but your Dad is on a powerful combo. I have been on that combo plus avastin since Sept/09 with good success.

I think they were saying avastin wouldnt be good for him because he has heart disease. Have you heard of it. The last mix he was on was 5fu and oxyplatin and was sick all the time. Did anyone experience naussea with the new combination?

nausea at all so every one reacts different to chemo.Concerning Avastin ,yes it's not suggested for people with hart or blood problems .
Hope it helps.
Hugs!

That is a good combination. My husband is Stage 4 since 2008 - he currently has no evidence of disease. He also had nodules on his lungs as well as his liver.

and with that comes the reasoning to not introduce it to a patient with heart conditions. It causes blood pressures to go up and down dependent on the locale of the tumor...It is also used in the opthalmology field as in giving patients with macular degeneration, shots of Avastin behind the eye to starve the blood clots that form behind the eye that causes the blood pressure spikes and eventually loss of vision. It allows the clots to disapate so that the pressure in behind the eye drops to normal pressures and thus creating normal blood flow back again....thus in some cases returning vision back close to normal.........

Did they tell you the size of the nodules ?...It still seems as though he is doing reasonably well even with the nodules...They are very adept at shrinking or ridding completely these growths if he responds well to his regimen and there seems to be no reason that he won't....Give him a large (((((hug)))) from all of us here..........Buzz

My husband is 52 and now in the end stage of colorectal cancer. He took 5fu twice and avastin, other drugs too. I would just urge you to have your dad's brain scanned. The docs didn't think a brain scan was important in my husbands case because colorectal cancer doesn't typically spread to the lungs then brain it typically goes to the liver first. Anyway, surprise surprise...his cancer went first to his lungs and after coming down with a debilitating headache we found out he has lesions all over his brain, in both lungs and just outside of his lungs.. it would have been nice to have the whole picture before we started putting him through all kinds of agressive treatments..best wishes to your dad and your whole family.
