Poor Jim got a nosebleed yesterday morning that just would not stop. Went to ENT to get it packed and came home. Started bleeding again. So back to his office near the hospital to find everyone had left the office. Made a few calls and found out his Doctor was doing surgery there at the hospital so we went to surgical holding room and he came out and repacked Jim's nose with another kind of packing. Very painful. Doctor goes back in to surgery and then Jim starts bleeding out of the other nostril, lots of bleeding. So they ended up taking him in to surgery to get it stopped. I remembered seeing somewhere that Avastin could cause nosebleeds and this is his 4th. And the worst. Anyone else had this problem with the Avastin. Poor Jim is on Cumadin, asprin and plavix too which is being held for a few days. He is having some pain in his groin and shoulders now, so of course I'm concerned about blood clots. He is on the Cumadin because they found a blood clot in his groin last time he had a scan in August.
He was just unplugged yesterday from his 4th treatment of folfox. ..Oh great, he just blew his nose....everyone told him not to do that because he could start the bleeding again....and some of the packing came out.........Oh geez..............why don't men listen to their nurses and Doctors..........and wives?....Oh geez!

I am sorry to hear that Jim has had these issues. I am on avastin + get a little bit of nose bleeding, but nothing like you are describing - just a little blood in the tissue when I blow my nose. I hope Jim is feeling better soon.

    Nosebleeds
    Hi,
I am on Avastin every other week. My problem is I have a 1" scab in each nostril.... way down deep in the nasal passages. Every morning when I wake and blow my nose I blow out those 2 scabs and then the nose bleeds.... until it starts clotting.. not very long.... but it very very slowly bleeds during the day until a very thick scab has again built up by bedtime. So I blow my nose again.. I gotta because it is blocking nasal passages by this time.... and then the scabs come out for the 2nd time of the day and the whole cycle starts over and by morning I have to blow them out again...REPEAT! Anyway, I tried everything from nasal sprays...to antibiotics... to a Neti Pot... that worked wonders on my sinus drip but not the scab problem. I see a ENT next week who will be cauterizing (sp?) the inside of my nose to stop scabs from building up thus should eiminate problem. My point here is this ALL started with minor bloody noses from Avastin that got totally out of control. Just another day in the neighborhood! Hope Jim heals up soon. You take care.

    Oh, dear.
I'm really sorry about the nosebleeds. I don't have advice for you, but I hope it will be his last nosebleed.

    Jim!
    Don't blow your nose. Geez.

You hang in there for him. I had heard from many that nosebleeds are a side effect of Avastin. Of course if he is taking Cumadin, aspirin and plavix he is going to be more susceptible to bleeding so when he starts to bleed it may be more difficult to stop it.

    HUGS to you.

    Because they're hard headed.... :-)
    That's why they don't listen Nana...SO hard headed! :-)

I deal with the same thing with my son. I'm sorry you have to see Jim go through this and feel worse for him. It's so unnerving to see blood...no matter where it's coming from. I pray that by now they have been able to control the bleed.

My son is just starting to experience the Avastin nose bleeds. Nothing like your Jim is experiencing. I think the Coumadin and aspirin are making Jim's nosebleed more severe. Hopefully a few days rest from those drugs will bring him relief.

Hang in there honey. This cancer thing is quite a ride!!!

    All the best,

    Dee

    Nosebleeds:
Last year in the cold weather when George was on Folfox with Avastin he did get nosebleeds. Nothing like you are describing though. Learned through this board that it happens to almost everyone in the colder climates. He is still getting the Avastin and does tend to blow his nose a lot which then causes him to cough.

Any bleeding from the nose was minor, nothing like you are describing although several people did complain of heavier bleeding.

    Hang in there - Tina

I got nose bleeds when I was
I got nose bleeds when I was on avastin from Sept to Feb of last year. Nothing like what you are describing.
I had a terrible nose bleed in the ICU after surgery in April. The nurse and a few doctors couldn't get it to stop. Finally a different doctor came in and said they weren't pushing hard enough. He pushed the packing, which he called a nose rocket, so far up my nose it started coming out my ear. My nasal cavity on the right side was swollen and expanded for a few months. Actually I still get gigantic boogers out of my right nostril. It was fun at first. Now it's just irritating.
Tell Jim that a fellow cancer patient and fellow ignorer of nurse/doctor/wife said, "Quit blowing yer nose!!"
    Take care - Roger

You guys are cracking us up,
You guys are cracking us up, thanks for the laughs, we needed that! Jim is doing much better today. Had VERY high blood pressure most of the day Saturday, like 184/120, but it came back down and has stayed more normal yesterday and today. He goes a week from tomorrow for treatment #5 of 12. Wondering what kind of problems we should be preparing for next. I guess they will leave the Avastin out of his next chemo cocktail. Hugs to all of you.

    Hi Peggy,
    His stamina has

    Hi Peggy,
His stamina has been pretty okay. He told me last week before his treatment that he actually feels pretty normal for the most part. I mean he takes a nap every day (but so do I and I'm 11 years younger than him) but that's about it. How are you doing?
    ((hugs back at ya))

    Yes, nosebleeds
I too had nosebleeds on Avastin. Not to the degree you have described though. Taking aspirin and coumadin also thin your blood and make you prone to bleeding and hard to clot. I imagine they are checking is pro-times since he is on coumadin to make sure they are normal. I too ended up with a blood clot(pulmonary embolis) on the Avastin....in my case since I had finished the 12 folofox treatments and was only doing Avastin alone for reasurance so they stopped the Avastin...and put me on coumadin for 3 months.

I am glad he is doing better.

Men certainly are a challenge (sorry, guys!)
Good news that he is doing better!

Make SURE onc knows about this....even if you have to repeat several times!!!!

My beau, after a heart ablation procedure where they went thru his groin to his heart, was told to lay STILL for 6 HOURS so as not to BLEED OUT!!!! Did he listen???? Of course NOT!!! So, near the end of the time, I sat on his other leg, so he couldn't move...sigh...and he's a doctor, he should know better!!!

    Hugs, Kathi

    Wow Kathi
How do I say this? A medical professional and a male? We all know that medical professionals make the worse patients. He has 2 stikes against him when it comes to being compliant. ;)
