THEY SHRUNK MY THYROID WITH RAI. THEY COULD NOT GET THE TUMOR THO. I HAVE TO GO FOR OUTWARD RADIATION AND CHEMO TO GET THAT--SURGERY FAILED TOO BECUZ OF THE POSITION. THEY WANTED TO EXPERIMENT AND SEE IF THE IODINE WOULD TAKE AWAY THE HUGE TUMOR ON THE LEFT SIDE TOO. IT WOULDN'T.
I CUDN'T EAT FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I CHOKE AND GAG A LOT NOW AND CAN CHEW SOME FOOD. DID YOU GAG AND COUGH AND HAVE MUCOUS. HOW LONG DID IT LAST?THANKS AND GOOD LUCK

i still choke once in a while
    Hi,
right after my surgery I had to sleep reclining for a few weeks or I would choke. After RAI, I coughed a bit and choked on food a lot. However, my throat/neck was numb for a long time. I was able to eat, but very slowly. I was too worried about throwing up.

Even present day (it's now 10 months since RAI) and I still choke on food, water and even while talking. I'm scheduled to have an endoscopy to see if there are any blockages.

Have you lost sense of taste or anything like that?

hi no I haven't lost my sense of taste--and my coughing is stopping. I went today about radiation and chemo. My tumor is inoperable. They are baffled by my case. When they tried to take out my tumor and couldn't they did a biopsy and it came back benign. in april. The needle biopsy in february came back malignant. I have bad esophagitis. I havwe haD ABOUT TEN OR MORE ENDOSCOPES AND SLEEP WITH A BED THAT RAISES and take prilosec teice a day..whoops sorry for the typing. i went through a lot of tests today. what area do you live...i go to a fabulous gi doctor in ny for my endoscopes --he saved my life. good luck and let me know how you are doing

    hi grateful1
How are you doing today? I'm glad that your coughing is subsiding. Are your doctors still researching other options for your tumor? I live in California. I do have a wonderful GP that refers me to the best available in my area. I pray that there's nothing wrong with my throat etc.

Remember to rest, your body has been through a lot with the RAI. Believe me, it takes a toll on your body, more than you actually realize. Work on getting your strength back too.

Thank you for the well wishes and please keep me update also.

    Take care
