TT surgery site

I had a TT on April 12(2 weeks ago) due to papillary carcinoma. I didn't have to have any glands removed so it was just a standard TT. I was curious about how long it took for other peoples surgery site to heal. My incision looks good but it is still quite swollen(about the size of an egg), and it is also hard to the touch. I called the doc today and he said that it is normal. He also said to massage the area lightly while I am in the shower. Has anyone else heard of this? I was just curious how long to expect a lump on my throat. Any ideas or experience would be helpful. Thanks, Buffalo13

    massage yes
i had my surgery on feb 22 and then the completion on mar 9th they were able to remove my thyroid with a single slit to my neck about 4-5 in long once the took the stiches out (about two weeks) it was somewhat swollen and hard to the touch. i was told to apply a very small amount of cocoa butter every night and massage the area with 2 fingers as often. it has been a few weeks now and the swelling has gone down and i think the massaging has been helping the scar go down. i was told to use the cocoa butter after the steri strips fell off of there own accord.. not knowing how healed your surgical site is i would ask the doctor about the cocoa butter. i have also been told that everything verries from person to person so.. dont have any definate answers but i think the massage helps

    good luck

My surgery site is down and scar is fading after two and a half months. I had a cut of about 4 to 5 inches and it is healing great. I had my surgery on the 12 of Feb. go back to endo on Friday after doing my labs on the 17th. I have lost 18 pounds so far which I'm thrilled about.

    Thanks about massage
Hi nasher, Thanks for confirming about massage. I need to quit being a baby and just massage it. It just kind of creeps me out a bit, plus it is still quite tender to the touch. I guess I thought the surgery would have been easier because my ENT(surgeon) made it sound like it would be a 'walk in the park'. I find it very frustrating when doctors downplay how you feel or are going to feel. Then I end up feeling like a wimp when It seems to take longer to heal up. When I had my post-op appt, he walked in the room and said "Quit acting like you hurt". He laughed and said he was joking when I told him I wasn't faking. That didn't sit well with me. I am glad that he is humorous but some of his jokes are too much. O.K. Thanks again for responding. Oh, I almost forgot, Thanks for suggesting the cocoa butter. I think it should be fine beacuse the cut itself looks very good. I do see the endocrinologist tomorrow so I can ask her too. thanks again, Buffalo13
