Problems with drain catheters after liver resection

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone on the board has experience with biliary drain catheters after liver resection? My husband David, stage 4, had a liver resection March 24 of this year and has had trouble with the drains leaking internally and not draining properly. He has had the catheter replaced twice now and is on his third hospital stay at M D Anderson. He's been discharged and feels fine for a couple of days then feels lousy. His bilirubin was 3.5 today before he went into surgery again. Today is one month we have been here.

I am not complaining at all but concerned with these bumps in the road. We know we are fortunate to find a surgeon who would do the operation and David is getting excellent care.

    Did they put an external drainage bag for a few days to help the backed up bile drain? Sometimes this will help for a few days - and then they can remove the external bag once bilirubin starts to come down. 3.5 is not bad....my husbands got up to 9.4 before starting to come down. Hope all goes well....and yes, you will have bumps in the road but stay on top of everything....best advice I can give you. Blessings to you today - hope today is a good day!
