It is a good way to get the message out there to keep everyone updated. I know my wife was overwhelmed with all of the phone calls and having to keep going over the status etc.
And alot of people do cut off talking to you, because they don't want to bother you - I still fall in that trap too - just don't want to burden someone down when they are up to their hips in alligators.

For me and my loved ones, the internet has been a godsend! I particularly agree with the comment about the electronic media allowing you to craft your information to best meet your needs! Especially when the news is not good, what you want to let out and how you want to "spin" it makes a big difference not only for you, but for those receiving the news. Of course, I program computers for a living, so electronic media is second nature to me and to many of those I love!
