Liver Pre-op Question

Hi, I am wondering what happens during "pre-op" of liver surgery. My sister is scheduled for liver surgery on 2/4, but has pre-op 2/3. Her PET did show "uptake" in the peritoneal area, but the tumor board gave the green light. Is there a chance they would say no after pre-op? This has happened once before, but it was pre pre-op, where during a scan two lymph nodes were lighting up. Thanks for the advice!

    When I had my liver surgery I don't remember any particular pre-op. A week before surgery I met with my surgeon and we went over the procedure and I signed the consent forms. I also had an EKG done. Other than that there were no particular procedures to do. I imagine they take blood the day before surgery, perhaps run the EKG, take vitals. Other than that, I am not sure. Your family is in my thoughts (have been for a long time actually...) and I know that your sister's surgery on Friday will go tremendously. Please keep us posted throughout the day if you are able.

    What they did for me was go over my medical history, ekg, visit with anestisia department, blood work and type, and finally a nurse to discuss EVERYTHING. Once they had that it was a go. The surgeon did warn me that if they opened me up and found cancer that had not shown up on the pet scan in my belly then they would just close me back up without doing the resection. According to him this happens in some cases.

    Thank you, that makes sense. It is good to be prepared and know what is ahead. I did not know that if they found cancer in the belly, they would not resect. I hope that is not our case.
