1010WINS.com just posted an item stating:"Poor women seeking free cancer screenings are being turned away in some parts of New York state because this year"s budget crunch has forced a $3.5 million cut to a program providing them"......What is the cost going to be to treat these woman when/if they come down with cancer, not just economic costs but human costs as well? Things will probably get worse befoore they ever get better, politicians being what they are!!!!!Steve

    "State officials argue the problem is that the programs aren't doing enough to reach out to women in the newly identified high-priority group _ those from age 50 to 64, and women who have a familial history of breast cancer, or have the breast cancer gene. The Centers for Disease Control recently required the state to provide 85 percent of their mammogram screenings to those high-risk women in order to get federal funding.

    Six months into the state contract year, partnerships statewide have spent only 24 percent of their funds, said Claudia Hutton, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health.

    "They do seem to be screening fewer women, but we do not understand why,'' she said."
