By 9 AM this morning I will be back at my cancer center. Once my port gets flushed, as it hasn't been useed since first round ended mid-July,I will start my second round of chemo consisting of 5FU,Leucovorin and Oxy with a pump.Wanted to delay but onc suggested otherwise. Back on the rollercoaster!!!!!!I ####### hate this but i HATE cancer even more.....Steve

I pray that this round of chemo will accomplish its task and you will only look forward to better health. In other words, I hope it kicks your colon cancer into oblivion. Jo Ann

Well by my clock you are there now and beginning treatment. I wish you the best through this session. Keep us informed as to how your treatments are affecting you (or not hopefully). I just completed the same mixture. Good luck!

the port would not work. Chemo nurses kept trying to flush it to no avail so Iwas sent to hospital. TPA (I think that's what it was) was tried and doctor couldn't get it to work either. Now I have to decide if I want a temporary PICC to get chemo started or another port. Have no idea what to do. Will ask for advice in another message.....Steve

Hi Steve:

Sorry that your port is not working and this is frustrating. I have been on all those medicines you mentioned so I know what that treatment regimine is like. Maybe the best thing to do is get another port implanted. I don't have any experience with PICC as my port has always worked well. I'll be thinking of you as you go through this. Take care. Roy

I'm pretty new to all of this as well, so I'm not sure how worthy my input is, but from everything I read and been told that the port is the way to go by far. From personal experience, it's been a piece of cake for now.

Sorry to hear about the port. I got a second one and delayed starting chemo. Due to the surgeon having to leave an open wound (to drain infection) when they removed my first port, they really didn't want me starting chemo till it healed anyway. I could have pushed matters and had a picc line instead of a port after my first bad experience, but my oncologist said for younger people he always pushes for a port. We are too active to deal with a picc for 6 months if we don't have to. They are a lot more hassle - you have to cover it when you shower, and can't swim - they are higher risk for infection. Not as convenient at all. After seeing a friend with one, I'm very happy I went with another port instead of the picc.

You could get the port removed from one side and a new one inserted on the other side at the same time. If you are going to start chemo right away after they get the port in (same day or day after) have them leave the port accessed. I don't know how much swelling and discomfort you had with your first port insertion, or how you react to the anesthesia, but I'm glad I had a couple days after I got the new one before chemo.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Chemo is hard enough on the veins as it is.....get another port installed and then after chemo make dang sure that its flushed at least every 6 weeks or it will plug up again...
