ppurdin--I'm so sorry that I missed your post...
it's so hard to lose those who love you so unconditionally. I lost my pup of 10 months last summer, but now have a new pup that I rescued. I don't think I could get through all my ups and downs without her.
I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend. Know that he is in rainbow heaven (someone special sent this to me when I was grieving):
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I wanted to add my (((HUG)))) to your loss, as well. It is never easy, but sometimes the timing just couldn't be more wrong, could it? But, as I experienced with my own 18 year old German Shepherd, THEY are ready to go long before WE are emotionally willing to let them...
I know you will keep a special place in your heart for Caspar, as you face the rest of your journey with courage and strength. And of course, we are here for you, whenever you need us.

May I suggest, Pat?
I know (I recently lost my dog of 12 years) that you do not want to think of 'replacing' your beloved pet (as if that were possible) right away. But, you might check with your local shelter and see if they need 'adoptive homes' for some of their dogs. You might be asked to keep a dog for a couple of days or weeks or whatever until a permanent home is found. Of course, you might want to wait until you see how you are going to respond to treatment and see if you feel up to it.
That way, you are still 'in the loop' of the pet world but with no commitment unless you happen to meet up with a sweetheart of a dog you just can't live without. Stranger things have happened.

When I lost my young pup EvaMarie, I vowed that I was done with GSDs and I buried everything with her-including her blanket. Then, a little girl of only 8 months came into my life that had it pretty rough her first 6 months.
After seeing her on the Net at a foster home, I decided to just go and look at her. Well, about two hours later, she was in the car with me and going to her new home. She had many challenges that I had to worked out and it forced me to focus on her instead of my own set of challenges. She is small enough for me handle, on my bad days, but still the breed I love most-German Shepherd.
Sometimes, it's at times like these, that we need someone-who needs us. It took me nearly ten years to open my heart up to another GSD after my sweet Mandy (another GSD find) died at the ripe old age of 16. That's when I got EvaMarie, I thought she was the dog who would help me get out of my state of depression--then, only 10 months later, I had to let her go. I crashed into deep depression. My onc told me to get anti-depressant drugs--I got a dog instead.
Pat, as I said in my last post to you, those of us who love animals (and, interestingly enough you will find many on here have a pet by their side) will understand that each of our pets hold a special place in our hearts and whoever follows will never take that special place. We must have very big hearts, for all the beloved pets who come into our lives and leave too suddenly.
Have you ever noticed, that it seems that they also come into our lives when we need them most?
While Casper watches over you from Rainbow Heaven, there may be another dog who needs you as much as you need him. I know, because that's when Emmy came into my life.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog Casper. I had to put my golden retriever Toby down last Sept. I should have done it 6 months earlier but just couldnt do it. It was like saying goodbye to one of my kids.
Dogs love us like none other. My relationship with my dog was very unique...no one in my family could really duplicate what I had with him so I truely know the pain you feel.
One thing I might suggest to you..I dont know what breed Casper was but we ended up getting a golden retriever puppy in Dec and now Riley is about 9 months old and full of it. I truly would not have gotten a puppy if I knew I would be going thru bilateral mastectomy and chemo because I have only enough energy to walk him 1 time per day. My plan was that we would be running 3 to 5 miles 3 to 4 times per week, but thats just not in the cards right now.
Take time to grieve and to get thru your treatment plan...

Thank you so much for your reply.It made me think of when i first got Casper,my youngest child has got married and my husband worked over the road trucker.So i would be alone the first time in my life.But Casper was a puppy then.So he did come into my life when i needed him.I am doing better today.As you know i will always miss him.I have made a nice grave sight in my back yard for him.Maybe one day i can open my heart to a new puppy.i think i will go to the pound instead of a pet store .Thank you for your concern.I really appriatte it.God bless you. I work for a no-kill animal shelter, which we take in stray and abused animals. I'm the cat manager there, and I adopted 5 cats from the shelter. I grew up living with dogs, and I know how much more work they are then cats. When I met my second husband 9 yrs. ago, he had 4 labs in the house. When we got married in 2002 we just had the dogs and no cats. Well as the years went by, the dogs passed on, ranging between 18 and 19 yrs old, which is old for a lab. That's when I brought the kittys into our home. I told my husband, no more dogs, I worked all day, my husband was disabled, and it would of been up to me to take care of a dog. Well when I came down with cancer last year, I went through all the treatments, hair loss, depression, worrying about my husband, and still kept on working. This past March a family lost their home to a fire and they had a dog. Where they was living didn't alow pets, so they to surrender the dog over to our shelter. When they brought the dog in, the guy put him down, I looked at the dog, he looked at me. I told him to come here, he came over to me and put his head on my lap. I told him that he was going to be ok. Something bonded between us. He needed me and I needed him, so I decided to take him home. We are inseperable now. He's my best friend. He was home with us for two weeks till my husband had to go into a rest home. I think there was a reason for all this. He goes every where with me. I take him to work everyday. He's the most lovable and well behaved dog you could want. He won't stay home by his self, he gets upset because he's not with me. I think I'll go give my doggy a hug! 0 -

Sorry but I also missed your post. I want you to know how truly sorry I am for the death of your precious Casper. I am a dog lover (have 3) and I know how much it hurts to lose one. I hope you will consider getting another one to help you through this trying time.
