Just wanted so say thank you for all your words of support, I had my surguey on Wednesday and every thing went well, My Surgeon told me she would have the pathology report on Monday and that she would see me on the following Wednesday, but left with me by saying my lymph node was clean..........oh and only one drain tube!!
The days have past by pretty fast since Wednesday and the worst part of recovery is the tube, but over all I'm doing Okay I have plenty of pain medicine and the family has been pretty helpful.
I'm not to sure what to think though because I just got a call from my Surgeon (on a Sunday eveening)and she said the path report had come in and that she had alot of good news, apparently 5 nodes were removed and all were clean.....yippy! the tumor size was only 1.4cm, another...... yippy and the cancer was stage 1........once again yippy. She also said that I could come in tomorrow and have the tube removed tomorrow if the fluid level is below 30cc in a 24hour period , which I think it is.............giant yippy !!!

and then she said but.........the margins on one side, the side closest to the skin were not clear enough for her and that she wanted to go back in, as soon as my insurance will approve it, she called it a re-insission, I think............so I did what I usally do when I'm taken off guard and I blanked out....now I'm wondering has anyone else had to go through this before? The insission that she made to remove the lump is very clean and so is the one under my arm. now I'm wondering what it's going to look like now after another surgury?

She said my insurance shouldn't take more than a week and I will see her in the next day or two, over all I"m very happy with the results, just as little confused. Any info would be appreciated.

First I want to say that I am so happy for you for all the good news! I did not have this happen to me, the reincision but I was wondering the same thing about my port incision. It is looking fine now but what about after they remove it? I had 3 c-sections and they went over the same scar and it looks okay, I know it is totally different but it makes me hopeful. I have heard of several people needing to have the surgeon go back in though because of the margins. Now go get that drain out! I had four and it IS one of the worst parts!

    That is really great news!!
That is really great news!! Maybe you won't have to do chemo either. I think the re-incision happens quite a bit to get better margins. I personally did not go through this as they scraped the chest wall (and got a 1mm clearance) and other than taking muscle there was no more to take. Best of luck to you

So glad for you that everything has gone so well. I had to have a reincesion also for the same reason. You will find this very common among us bc survivors. I didn't have a drain first time but the second time I did. You will probably notice a little more indention with the reincesion.

Take care and keep us posted

That makes me hopeful also, I've only let myself think about the port a few times and only a little bit, that's another surgury right? Oh well whatever, like I said above I think I'm getting the better end of the deal here and really couldn't be happier,
Thanks for easing my mind on the re-insision ( I know I'm not spelling that right) and I keep checking that drain ever hour, if i can get it out tomorrow you can bet I will!!!!

That exactly what I'm wondering about, but all in all who cares right??????
Alittle indentation compared to cancer means I'm getting the better end of the stick right?

My surgeon keeps telling me to be prepared for chemo so that's what I'm doing I figure it's easier to change from that mind set then to hope I don't only to find out I do. I did ask about that Onocodx test. And she said that one would be done and that even Med-ical would pay for it, but I don't know when, how or who orders this test. I guess that is a qauestion for my next appointment.
She also mentioned mm/cm thickness and thats about when I blanked out. I'll find out tomorrow.

    Lots of good news, Aurora!
Thanks for sharing! I also had lumpectomy surgery - didn't need the re-incision (got "clean" margins); but, my surgeon had warned of the possibility. As others have already posted, I believe it's fairly common.

    Best wishes to you.

    Kind regards, Susan

    Great news Aurora
and the re-incision thing is fairly common, I didn't need it, but they told my mom she probably would, but they left it up to the radiologist, and they said they got enough clean margins to leave it. Whatever it is they decide, I am sure you will go for it, to be sure. Especially since all the other news is so good.
Let us know how it goes tomorrow

I had clean margins the first time, but, I think it is common that they have to go back in sometimes to get it clean. I guess what I am saying is it isn't rare. Good luck!

    Aurora,
Usually your surgeon orders the oncotypeDX test. They probably already sent it to Gerome Labs to be tested (the lab will call you to confirm that Insurance will cover). It takes a couple weeks for results. So far, by the sounds of your stats, you probably will not have to go through chemo, but it's good that you are prepared. I did the same thing, found out I didn't need it, then got thrown a curve ball that I wasn't ready for (or thought an impossibility!) I hope you continue to get good results!! :) Pammy

I am so happy to hear that your surgeon had such good news for you. The reincission (sp?) doesn't sound too bad from what the others said, so I hope that goes well for you, too. It's great that you felt well enough to post so soon after surgery. I'm impressed. :)

I hope that's whats happening as for as the oncotype DX is concerned, she mentioned something about being "intermediate" and then something about "TR" ??????? not sure what any of that means.I'm going to ask for a copy of both pathology reports. (the one before surgury and the one after) when I see her to get this tube out...........I'm really starting to hate this tube alot especially since she said it might be able to come out tomorrow.

Hey what do you mean you were thrown a curve ball?? Did I miss something while I'was away? Are you having chemo now? I don't know why but my sutgeon seems to think chemo is a must, but like I said before I still haven't seen an oncologist yet?????????

That will be a whole different adventure, for now I'm okay with doing chemo.

    Your Welcome Susan
I wished she would have mentioned the possiblity to me before surgury, it kinda took me for a loop, but I guess it's just another step... Ay least it's not unheard of that was my main concern.

    Thanks Susan

    Curve ball....
Was all set to start Radiation (had simulation & got tattooed) when my Rads Oncologist said we really needed to wait on the BRCA Gene test to come back before we begin. Seems if it is positive, I would have a 43% chance of cancer in the other breast, he will recommend a double mastectomy before he ever did Radiation. I think that would be so I could have reconstruction. So I am on hold once again waiting on results which should be about another 10 days. Uggh....:) Pammy

I don't know what that means..maybe someone can help us out? I am glad you have this part done and have accepted that you are doing chemo. I wouldn't think twice at doing it or rads again if needed. It isn't fun but it is doable...and you have the rest of your life to enjoy and recover! sending you healing prayers.

    Wahoo!
Glad the news was good...sorry about the re-incision (correct spelling!).

Every single bit of my breast tissue, both sides, was scraped clean before they put implants under my chest muscles, so there was nothing to go back for on me either. But it certainly sounds as if you're in good company, and your attitude is great, so keep up the good work!

    Hugs,
