I hope y'all will be thinking of me tonight. My Relay for Life team is having a talent show tonight. It was a huge fundraiser for us last year, so I hope it does well again this year. I'm singing 2 songs. I was only going to do 1, but we found out this week that a little 4 year old girl from our church family has leukemia, so we're dedicating the show to her, and I'm singing "Bless the Beasts and the Children." Hope I can get through it. Her grandfather is in the choir with me and sang this song with me once before. He's also the emcee of our show. I can guarantee there will be tears, not all because of my singing efforts...

    That's cool Gail
Hey neighbor!!! When is your Relay for Life? This year will be the first I do not have testing done the day of the race here so I am going to do one in Greenboro or Burlington.

    Lisa P.

PS. Seems like we have some pretty talented folks here. We could start a band or something. Do NOT expect me to sing though, I can barely hum.

    Hi, Neighbor!
    I participate

    Hi, Neighbor!

I participate in the Rockingham Co. Relay for Life. Ours is May 15-16. Come join us if you like! It'll be at Freedom Park in Eden this year. I guarantee you a good time-last year the 2 other members of my team who are survivors and I were dancing on the field in the early morning hours.

I like your idea of a band. How about the Semi-Colons?

    We rocked!
Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm so happy I could cry, and I have cried a lot tonight. I did get emotional and did sort of go up on some of the lines of the song, because I mentioned the little girl and then lost it a bit. However, I have to say this. WE RAISED OVER $1500!!!!!
That means we reach our team goal for Relay. And I "won" the talent show (people voted by making donations), so I was able to donate the prize (a gift card to Wal-Mart) to the little girl with leukemia. That made me very, very happy.

Sounds like your show was a sucess!

Because Bill has been so sick this year we have not been able to put a team together for the "Relay" but we will be doing it again next year. And hopefully Bill will be well enough to walk in the "Surviour" lap again. It is certainly a fun and worth while cause!
Our granddaughter who was 7 the first time we took part, walked the whole night, with our team and all the other teams. She told everyone she was doing this for her grandpa, and everyone was cheering her on! She finally fell a sleep at about 5:30am and we could not wake her for the closing ceremony. The memories will last a life time!

    Thanks
Yeah, I remember walking in my first survivor lap last year, and I was weak with emotion by the time I was done. I hope you and Bill will be able to Relay again next year!

    survivor lap
    Hi Gail,

I'm thrilled to hear about how well the show and fundraiser went! I would have loved to see the look on the little girl's face (and her parents' faces) as the check was being presented.
Now, I have a "dumb" question to ask... I'm looking into participating in my town's upcoming Relay for Life and someone mentioned me maybe walking in the survivor lap. If I'm still fighting cancer, can I truly be considered a "survivor" for the survivor's lap? I know I'm surviving (having been diagnosed a year and nine months ago and now being on "maintenance" treatment), but without the official NED tag to go by yet, I'm not sure that I technically qualify as a "survivor". I know many will encourage me to go for it as I'm surviving, but does ACS or the Relay for Life group have an "official" definition of who's considered a cancer survivor? In my mind, I'm thinking of people who can say they had cancer and have absolutely no sign of any cancer in them at the time. What are your thoughts on that?

    Go, Survivor, Go!
    Lisa,

You're considered a survivor from the moment you find out you have cancer. If you have been diagnosed and you're still breathing, claim that title! I strongly urge you to go to Relay. It's very emotional, and you will never forget it. Each Relay is a local event, so they all have their own spin on how to recognize the survivors. Here in Rockingham County, the survivors are given a free meal the week of Relay. They have a speaker, give us free t-shirts, goody bags, and door prizes. So nice I even enjoyed it last year when I couldn't eat a thing, because I was doing the prep for a colonoscopy the next morning (I sat REAL near the bathroom!). At Relay we are given a rose when we start the first lap. It's just something you will remember forever. Even if you are in treatment and not feeling well, they will do everything they can to make it possible for you to participate. Please do it and let us know how you feel afterwards.

    *hugs*
