my mom has an appointment next week with her lung doctor re: she has COPD and at her last visit 3 weeks ago her oxegyn level was low so Dr had her have a lung x-ray and called to say he sees an 8 cm (or mm?) lung nodule that wasn't there the last x-ray. Can anyone explain to me what this could be besides cancer? Thanks, Kit

    Don't fret Kit
Always think positive, like the glass is half full instead of half empty. You never know what that could be. You may be worrying for nothing. Keep your chin up and your mom's spirits. Another thing I always do and everyone is doing for us is praying. You never know what prayer can do if you get enough people with you. Miracles do happen. I'm also hoping for one for my husband and one for your mom too. God Bless

    what it could be
The fact that the doc is comparing two recent xrays and finding a growth like that does not bode well, frankly. Something, it seems, is growing.

However, with the COPD history you can hope for scarring of tissue due to anything from bronchitis to pneumonia to emphysema. It may even be a benign tumor.

It does not have to be cancer.

Even if it is, do not throw in the towel. A lot of people on this site are lung cancer survivors (I am one of them...told three weeks ago that I am cancer-free). As the other respondent says, maintain a positive attitude and hope for the best.

However, I would start reading up on lung cancer if I were you.

Best wishes to your mom and to her family.

    Take care,

    Joe

THANKS FOR RESPONDING. I AM REMAINING POSITIVE AS THE LUNG DR DID CALL AGAIN TODAY AND SPOKE TO MY MOM ABOUT HER SCAN. HE CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT YET AND WILL HAVE HER GIVE A BLOOD SAMPLE AT THE APPT. HE SAID IT COULD POSSIBLY BE SCARRING.
I AM A BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR NOT EVEN TWO MONTHS OUT OF CHEMO and STILL COMPLETING RECONSTRUCTION AND NOT A HAIR ON MY HEAD. So...I know what it is to remain positive and have hope. I'm just praying its not cancer and my mom does not have to endure what I have. Your all in my prayers. Kit

    What's next (probably)
    Hi Kit!

I'm both a breast cancer AND lung cancer survivor (both stage 1). When they found a "spot" on my chest x-ray that didn't look right, the first thing they did was do a CAT scan. Then they waited about three months and did another CAT scan. CAT scans give a three dimensional look at whatever is there. If they aren't sure what it is they wait. If it grows, they usually biopsy after the wait to see what it is. That was very different than when I had breast cancer. Then they biopsied the same week. I hope your mom's tests turn out well. Keep us posted.
