Hi I have had 12 rounds of 5fu, I have had the last 3 weeks off everything to prepare for surgery, does anyone out there have stomache bloating? I look like i'm 5 months pregnant!!!
My eating habits have not changed since starting. I also don't exercise, but I never have either. Please let me know, if so, when does it get back to normal!
God Bless,
Karyn

    stomache bloating
    Hi Karyn,

I don't remember having stomache bloatting from chemo. I actually lost weight during chemo. Did you talk to you onc about this? I know when my bowels are irritated it feels like I'm bloated but you shouldn't wait to find out what this could be. Has it just started happening or was like this the whole time on chemo? Good luck on your surgery too. HUGS.

    HI
I didn't loose weight during chemo, I did have an appetite. I talked to my onc and he said there are steroids in the chemo treatment. I will talk to him again. Thanks for responding!!

p.s. my husband and I went to florida last week, I had my bathing suit on and I was walking around holding my stomach, my husband asked if I was o.k., I told him if I walk around like this people would think I am pregnant! Instead of having a big bloating stomache!!!He thinks I'm NUTS!!!

    Me too
I started Emend (nausea meds) and decodron (steroid) in early July. I started having food cravings and gained weight and now I bloat alot! My sister visited and said "nice belly" I too look pregnant. It is worse when I eat or when my bowel and intestines are full. It's uncomfortable but definatley from the steroids and weight gain. I am also on tagament and protonix for an ulcer they think I may have from the chemo. The steroids make me hungry all the time and I find myself eating even when I'm not hungry and I eat too large of a portion that makes its worse. I lost 25 pounds after surgery and the start of chemo so I figure better too much than too little, I'll diet when chemo is done. till then the world can think what they want.

    ME THREE!
The decadron made me very hungry too, and i gained 36 lbs since my surgery. I had my onc cut down the decadron to almost nothing, but he said it was the chemo that causes the hunger and cravings. I didn't care. Like you, i've waited until chemo was finished to concentrate on losing weight. I'm about four weeks out of chemo, and no longer have the horrible cravings, and appetite of a hog. I'm limiting dairy (particularly cheese), and eating more asian cuisine which has virtually zero dairy. Dairy can cause bloating, especially if you eat it like i used to. And the chocolate!!!!???? We won't go there. Also cutting that out, mostly. I think anything in abundance is bad, but completely cutting something out of your diet can cause you to stop producing those enzymes, and then you can get sick from eating it. I don't want to never be able to eat cheese and chocolate again!

I've been told that the steroids cause bloating, and i really noticed a difference in my face when i stopped them. I'm sure you can bloat in other areas from it.

    Many hugs,
    Krista

    bloating
I have been off chemo for 8 weeks (not my choice). Bloating has returned. I have a few issues, since I am stage 4 with numerous mets to the liver. First is that whenever I am off chemo, my liver goes back to swelling (as it was when I was diagnosed). This creates a lot of pressure in the upper abdomen and it interferes with the stomach which is right behind it beneath the sternum. The second issue is my liver function. Chemo and cancer weakens the liver and the liver enzymes go up (that is they are getting into the bloodstream where they don't belong, which puts a stress on the body). This is a sign that the liver is not doing it's job. Somehow that can cause bloating. I read recently on the internet that reducing salt intake can help relieve the accumulation of fluid (called ascites) associated with bloating.
