Now it's stomach cancer...

For the newer folks...I signed onto CSN just over two years ago after being diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer (HNPCC / Lynch Syndrome). Had surgery and chemo, and thankfully was NED since January of 2007...until today.

Last week I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy. My colon looked great - no polyps, no growths...perfect. But my stomach and duodenum was a mess...lots of ulcers, with gastritis and duodenitis. A biopsy was taken and the results came back as cancer. It is most likely not a colon met (that rarely ever happens - colon cancer rarely moves to the stomach), but probably is a new HNPCC primary cancer.

Tomorrow I have a CT scan and will possibly have another endo to determine the extent of the cancer. After that surgery to remove part or all of my stomach :( I know it sounds dreadful, but hey, some people pay big bucks to have stomach surgery for weight loss...guess I won't have to worry about weight issues anymore. Although I suppose I will have to skip that whole piece of Key Lime pie after my extreme stomach makeover. I see a future of juicing and mini meals for me, which is good.

Living with HNPCC left me with the realization that I would probably have more cancers, especially since my mom has had it four times, so I was in a strange way prepared. I just didn't think another cancer would come so fast.

All good thoughts, vibes, mojo, prayers, well wishes are very much appreciated...I'll keep you posted. Once again...thanks for being here.

When, in desperation after my husband's diagnosis with stage 3 (then 4) colon cancer, I first posted on this board in 2006, you and Sponge Bob were quick to reply and encourage me. I am forever grateful to you.

Because of the support of you and other wonderful people on this board (and our saintly oncologist at Hoag), I learned important lessons about improvements in treatment since the 1980s and the power of taking charge of one's care and believing that one can get well.

I'm happy (more than happy, actually) to report that my husband is now in remission and we are savoring his recovery and we believe in his future. We didn't get to this point, however, without real challenges including a second major surgery.

I've seen how resilient and strong you are from your posts on this board and I'm putting my money on you to tackle and vanquish this new challenge.

Live strong.

Katie: This really sucks!! I am so sorry this is happening again. I know that you can beat this, and hopefully it will be as Ron said, and they are just ulcers. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Monica

I am sending up big strong prayers, my dear, sweet soul!

PLEASE let me know if there is anything I can do...where is your mom? Does she need help with anything (if she's still out here in the West...).

I'm so sorry to hear about your new beast, Katie. I hope he dies easily, quickly, and takes all his little microscopic fiends with him so you'll suffer no more.

All my best wishes,

I signed on for a quick peak at the board, and your message stopped me in my tracks and I'm sorry that this is what you have to contend with. My dad always said all we can do is play the cards we are dealt. You have played with some pretty tough cards already, but you are one strong lady, as your mom must be, also.
My heart and prayers, good wishes and positive vibes are streaming to you and Bob. We are all standing behind you as you face this next challenge ( who says you can't juice Key lime pie? when you get to Boston for a visit, we can juice New England clam chowdah, too)
Stay as strong and focused as you are and keep us posted. BIG hug, Judy

Katie, I am so sorry to hear that. But hey, look at it this way, you kicked its butt once, u can do it again. My thoughts are with you and I'll be sending that good mojo your way. Hang in there and stay strong. You have a really great attitude about it. You are right, lots of people pay big bucks to get that kind of surgery and all so you are definitely looking at it the right way.

THANK YOU, my SemiColon Friends. I could never find the words to say how much I appreciate all of you for being here. Your friendship and support means so much.

I had my CT scan this morning and should know the results by Friday, and will know if I will have another endo or be scheduled for surgery. Bob is making arrangements to return home from deployment for my surgery and some recovery time.

Many, many thanks...and I will continue to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers too.

Oh, darling. I am so sorry. No matter how "prepared" for the possibility, it is still a huge blow. I know you will go through this next phase of your journey with all the grace and strength you typically show.....Sending love prayers and best wishes your way. Love, Tara

Hi Katie,
I am so sorry you have to go through this. I know I haven't spoken to you very much, but when I first joined this group Bob was one of the more active members and he was very uplifting to me as I was starting off on this "journey". I am sure that now he can be there for you (again) as he has been for so many of us. You are a lucky lady to have him. Take Emily's advice with the juicing, pH, etc. I truly believed that these things helped me. I still try to eat a fairly healthy diet, and yeah, people pay big bucks for the surgery you are having! lol. At least you'll be "hot".
Take care and best of luck to you,
Susan H.
