soft prosthesis

This is just a silly little question. I recently got my prosthesis and love it, But in the evening I'd like to wear a softer one around the house. I'm rather large on the other side, so it looks quite lop-sided without something. I have one that came with my post-op camisole, but it tends to rub and ride around. Anyone know of one that is concave on the skin side, but not too heavy---or expensive? I've seen some in the ACS catalogue, but the description doesn't say enough. Maybe something to put in a soft sports bra? Thanks, compared to the other posts this isn't exactly life changing, but you are all such great resources, I thought I might ask.

    I love my prosthesis too but i wear the darn thing all the time even around the house. My husband always tells me that when i'm home why do i bother to wear the darn thing at all. "I'm around family he says, we all know whats going on, be comfortable, relax, take the weight off.
    Funny huh! Well no he's right. Relax girl! Let yourself feel lopsided, it's okay. Besides those things are expensive.
    Also, never feel that your post is nothing because every post on this board is something regardless of the question you may ask.
    Have you checked with your onc.to see if he/she can offer anything.

    Hello NorcalJ,

    I get my soft light weight prosthesis from a local medical supply store here in this big size small town. They have shown me all kinds of different styles,shapes and sizes for any kind of need thought of. I go there because i can see what i'm about to purchase and even try it on. They have a couple women there that take me to a room and help to fit me. They also sell the bra or cami that you like. After not being in the store for a year and a half i went back and they remembered me by name before i told them. Then another lady went and got my file so they would be refreshed on my likes and dislikes so they could get started in the right direction. I love these ladies. I hope you can find a store like the one i have found.

    Sorry, I have no experience with this. I am planning reconstruction, so have done next to zero research. I would suggest a medical supply store, maybe your local ACS may have some you could try on and someone to help. Maybe "Look good, feel better" (can contact them throught ACS, or your cancer center).

    There are lots of options out there. If you could find a store near you that specializes in prostheses, you could try out a few. I had a "swimming" prothesis that had a hollow back that was a little lighter. However, I have read about foam protheses too. Some come sewn to the bra so you just hook up and go. Others are removable so you can just pop it in. Some are not foam, but are made to be lighter than silicone. Lighter ones may not hang exactly the same as flesh and blood, but if it is uncomfortable it is not worth being so picky in my book. So google "mastectomy"+"prothesis"+the name of your state. See if you can go shopping. Good luck!

    I have no experience with prosthetics, but I wanted to weigh in on your "silly little question"...there is no such thing! Everything about this journey, from the finding of the original lump to a decision you are making now, is life-changing! All of our lives have changed since that fateful day! The very things that made us feel womanly and feminine and fed into our psyches have been altered! Hair and Breast gone?? 2 mighty big deals for most of us. And whereas our hair grows back, our breast doesn't ( now that's a scary thought!!) So, you do what YOU need to do to feel more like the pre-cancer woman. Including wearing "the girls" around the house and in front of family! I slept with my bandanas under my pillow, so that first thing in the morning I could slip one on before anyone else saw me. Again, we each make the decisons to help us survive with not just our health, but our dignity in tact as well.

    Side note, I am a CentralCal girl, and have family in NorCal. Where abouts are you? I am in Santa Ynez, in Santa Barbara county.

    I heard about something called Bosom Buddies. They have a web site. They have some that are like softies like we got when we left the hospital but it is weighted so it doesn't ride up. I am rather large too, so I look weird without the prothesis. I keep saying I am going to look into these but haven't. You might check it out. I ditch my prothesis as soon as I get home and invariably someone will show up unexpectedly and there I am running for cover. Good luck. Let me know how you make out.
