zometa & dental

dentist told me because of zometa use my jaw may never heal. penicillin the rest of my life. does he really know? i thought antibiotics lose their effectiveness after a period of time. i have so many questions and don't know how to find answers.

    My oncologist and endodontist both told me that there is a slightly higher risk of bone loss in the jaw, but that the risk was very low compared to the benefit. No one told me about taking antibiotics for life (or even for a short period of time). You should first speak with your oncologist about the available data and perhaps consult with an Endodontist or Periodontist, but be prepared that they don't know that much about it. Perhaps your oncologist can give you a referral.

    I didn't know if anyone could hear me. My oncologist did refer me to this particular oral surgeon and i'm definitely not happy with his practice at all. I don't see my oncologist until two more weeks. I don't want to bother them in the interim. They are so busy.

    It might not help, but chemocare.com is a place to look up information about a specific drug and side effects, etc. Maybe talk to chemo. nurses? Look on a website for a research hospital, like M.D. Anderson in Houston, TX to see if they have any info on studies on the subject?
