One of the best resources I found while researching this drug is the book "The Wisdom of Menopause" by Christiane Northrup, M.D. She speaks to the pro and cons of taking this drug, even with incidence of breast cancer. I also was on it for about 4 months last year from July until Nov.

I have a tendency to read (maybe too much!) about any drug I have to take, so I was prepared for every side effect ever mentioned. However, I really didn't have major problems that affected my day to day existence all that much. I had a mild headache the first week or so. That went away and never came back, even though my doctor said it could last as long as I was on it (two and a half years altogether). I seemed to shed hair more while on tamoxifen, but I never developed bald spots or noticable thinning. My cycles noticeably changed from 5 days out of 24 days to 2 days every 45 days or so. Those two days were problematic (too many trips to the bathroom). I had a few hot flashes, but nothing so uncomfortable that I couldn't cope with it. I went on a healthy lifestyle kick at that time too, so I ended up losing weight (138 to 117) partly by exercising and mostly by portion control over five months of while I was on tamoxifen. Did you know that body builders take tamoxifen to lose body fat and define their muscles more? Of course, that's an under the table use of the drug, but so much for the side effect of weight gain from it. Eventually the student oncologist I had flipped out over the missed cycles and referred me to an ovarian cancer specialist. Better safe than sorry I guess. That led to quarterly ultrasounds to find out I had ovarian cysts that just weren't moving along like they should. The possibility that they could also be cancer was there, but tamoxifen can cause cycle changes without being cancer too. Surgery was eventually done and everything was normal after all. Because they took everything else out at that time, I switched from tamoxifen to aromasin (exemestane) which is more effective at reducing cancer reoccurance and lengthening survival time. Then I really had hot flashes!!! (and aches and pains and no more cycles at all).

Chemocare.com is a good site to look up chemo drugs, what they are for, and side effects. Your chemo nurses are good resources too, as well as your Oncologist.

I hope you are one of those who has mild reactions.

  • Tamoxifen causes uterine cells to divide rapidly. This slightly increases risk of uterine cancer. It also causes discharge which bothered me. Now after a year and a half, its decreased quite a bit. I have pretty bad hot flashes but chemo stopped my period so who knows...
  • Whitney, I was on Tamoxifen for about 7 years.
I got off it in 2002.
I did not suffer any extreme side effects while on it (I did go through menopause while on it, which was fairly painless), and I have not had any long term effects from it as far as I know.
Having said that, I will be 60 this summer and have arthritis and osteoperosis. But who can say whether I would have had both those or not without the Tamoxifen, as both run in my family.
Do your research until you feel comfortable and explore other options as well.
    Hugs hun.

Thanks for the info. I am turning 60 in June and have been on Tamox for a month now,and am only experiencing hot flashes,so far. I had a hysterectomy in my late 30`s so hopefully the hot flashes wont last too long.

I tried Tamoxifen for about three months. When I saw my Oncologist, I mentioned the every five minutes hot flashes and the twenty pounds I packed on. He said, oh, that's side effects from the Tamoxifen. I stopped taking it that day.

It was awful. I could not have a simple conversation without breaking out in a sweat a few times. At work, how professional is that?

At night, I would wake up drenched and have to change the sheets almost daily.

I'm sorry. It just was not worth it to me.
