survived surgery but only barely

Hello all, I amde it thru my surgery and got home from hospital on Friday. They found another cancerous mass higher up in my colon and 3 of 10 nodes were also cancerous. I went into resp arrest twice during surgery so as they were putting in a central line they punctured my lung resulting in a chest tube. I was then placed on a respirator and put into SICU for the first 3 days of my stay. I do not remember a whole lot about my hospital stay except the pain. My colostomy looks horrible. the doctor says its because I am overweight and that in time it will fill in. I am supposed to restart chemo but at first it was planned for the end of this month but my doc says we will have to wait for more recovery from my surgery first.

    Someone was watching over you during surgery :) Glad to hear you are recovering okay and it is a good idea to make sure you give yourself enough time to heal from surgery before putting chemo drugs into the body as well. I had my surgery on 10 July (tumor removed) and did not start chemo until 18 Aug.

    It is tough when things go wrong off the bat. My surgery was on Jan 4, what should have been 4-5 days in turned out to be 12. This was due to infection, and my heart started going nuts too (no previous heart problems - I'm 47). So My surgery was Jan 4 and I just had my first chemo yesterday, March 19. They say healing first is best so concentrate on doing just that. Take it very easy but as soon as thy want you up GET UP. It will be tough but will help everything.

    Healing is important before starting chemo...your body needs to be as strong as possible...listen to your doctor...and concentrate on healing and resting up!

    The most important thing is getting yourself healed from the surgery first. Chemo will do you no good if you are already feeling weak from the surgery. I will be praying for you to make a quick recovery.

    Good thinking on your doc's part about waiting for recovery. Healing time is important. You've gone through a major operation and sounds like your guardian angel worked overtime! Keep the faith and take one step at a time . That's so important. God Bless

    Wow, I am so sorry you had such a hard time but it is over now and the healing begins. Praying that you will have little or no side effects from the chemo, just take it easy and one day at a time.
