Wigs - Where to Buy

With hair loss eminent due to chemo, I've decided to take the bull by the horns and get my head shaved BEFORE it clumps it way out of my scalp. I also want to get one wig, for just in case, I feel the need to have hair. Can anyone suggest a good source? How do they size wigs? The ones on the ACS catalog website run about $150. I don't want to spend too much more than that. I'd appreciate comments, leads, suggestions. I know this is a piddly little thing compared to all of the life altering things that many of us are facing, but I want to be pre-emptive about this and need a little help. Thanks. Marilynn

    I was a wig person when I lost my hair. I couldn't stand for people other than my family to see me hairless. I started off buying expensive wigs... But found out that inexpensive ones were just as good. I found the ones at Paula Young were great. You don't want the human hair kind... To hard to take care of and they really don't look better. This is the web site. You can get a wig for between $30 to $50. Hope this helps.

    Try the REACH FOR RECOVERY chapter in your county. I received one FREE & it matched my natural color perfect or try ANGEL CLOSET or even your BC support chapter. I know our support group has given FREE ones out.. try Bosom Buddies. try www.tlcdirect.org I saw some in there for $38 and $40...I purchased many things from there.

    I had a wig and glad I did. I found mine and it was brand new but it was at the airport sale for unclaimed baggage. Spent $25.00 and it looked great. People didn't even know it was a wig. I did find it hot and itchy so I began just wearing bandannas. My mom had several when she went through chemo and found great looking onces at Walmart. Where do you live? Angela

    I live in Wheatfield, Indiana, about 80 miles southeast of Chicago. In fact, I'm being treated in Chicago at the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center. Thanks for your suggestion about Wal-Mart. I hadn't considered that. I've never had to think about wigs before. LOL.

    Marilyn, I sent you another email on your start page about my question about the 'double chemo.' Please read it and clarify if you have time. Regarding the issue of wigs, if you google "Y-Me" you will find a list of wig shops. You can also call Y Me at 1-800-221-2141 and they will tell you. I will be interested to see what resources you come up with since we both live in the same city and I may have to have chemo, too. Best of luck. Ohilly

    My wig has a see through top section that makes it look like you have a part. You can see the skin if you look carefully through the hairs. Try going on line, google wigs, and you can learn alot about wigs from the shops there, then buy from anyone else that is convenient armed with more knowledge. Also, I cut my hair good and short, but didn't actually shave my head. I heard that shaving it can be irritatting. Don't worry if the scalp hurts a little when the hair falls out. I was glad I didn't shave my head completely, because having my hair fall out, even the little pieces made me feel like I was on track for the cure, somehow.
