I just got diagnosed with breast cancer

The results of my stereotactic breast biopsy indicate low grade ductal carcinoma in situ with focal intraductal papillary component and microcalcifications. The dr. is recommending a mastectomy. He thinks it is all contained. Doesn't think I will need chemo or radiation. I had colon cancer 5 years ago. And my brother had breast cancer about 10 years ago. I don't have a date for surgery yet. Has anybody out there had this type of cancer. If so, did you have a mastectomy? Any advice from anyone would be welcome. I am almost 61.

    I had stage 1 tubular cancer, but did have a mastectomy due to a dozen abscesses spread throughout the breast. Have finished with the main part of reconstruction. No chemo or radiation either; just tamoxifen for five years. Very manageable. If you are planning on reconstruction, doing it immediately will save you some mental pain, knowing that the flat chest isn't permanent. If not choosing that route, then your recovery will be straightforward and you'll be done before you know it.

    Had a true lump, with clear margins...I DID have a friend with microcalcifications...she had a mastectomy...too many, too general to just take out each one...

    I had rectal cancer before my breast cancer....

    I had the same and had the mastectomy, just wish now they offered me both as a bi-lateral, now going in for elective surgery on other one...too heavy to wear prostethesis....I would have loved not having to take chemo or rads but had to. Your blessed to have found it sooner!

    I am so sorry to hear this. You'd think once would be enough!

    I had stage 11B in 3/6 nodes with microcalcification. They wanted to give me a lumpectomy with rads but I took the mastectomy to avoid radiation. But they wanted to give it to me anyway. I'm glad I took the mastectomy over the lumpectomy, now I don't need to wonder if they got it all out or not. Good luck to you on your decision making and thank God it was caught early. It would have been very nice to not do chemo.

    I am 56, just got diagnosed in July, invasive ductal carcinoma, 1 centimeter no lymph node involvement. I had a bilateral mastestomy with reconstruction on both(implants). My mom, maternal aunt and 2 brothers have had cancer this is the reason for being agressive, I am having trouble deciding on the chemo, I see my oncologist this Friday. I think I have heard that the insitu part means a 0 stage of cancer, not sure, I know mine was called invasive but had the term of insitu in my path report. It is so confusing. I wouldn't push my choice as right for everyone, but I do know I want to be around to see my grandchildren grow up if possible so I wanted to take all of the geograpy for this stuff to spread to out of the equation.
