My mom, age 61, was diagnosed w/ Stage 4 colon cancer in February. She had a colon resection and an ilieostomy. They were able to remove 80% of tumor. She had some very small ones in abdomen that couldn't be removed surgically. She had one round of continuous infusion 5FU/LV at end of April and in June had her first round w/ Xeloda (5 pills per day) 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. She's had a tough road and it doesn't seem to be getting any easier. Her ostomy is a high output, about a gallon a day, so she had to have a picc line place so we could give her fluids at home. Now she has a possible blockage. They tried Avastin w/ the Xeloda but that caused her to have a stroke - she has recovered well from it.
It's been very difficult for her and for me and my siblings. Just looking for anyone with similar experiences who have recovered. Our Faith is strong, but I must admit I'm not sure how much more we can handle.

Hey there,
I don't have a situation like your mother's but I will keep her in my prayers with hope that things will improve for her.

Hello ,

You seem to have walked into this site with a slew of newcomers. Welcome. Do you live near your mom in order to go with her to appointments and help her through this rough time? It will help her tremendously if you or a sibling can go with her to appointments. She's going through so much, and an extra set of ears will work wonders when the physicians explain things.

Best wishes for things to stabilize,

Stacy

Stacy, Thanks for your reply. And yes, I live w/ my mom. The only time I leave her is to go to work and then my sister is with her. One of us always goes w/ her to her appointments. We are very lucky in that we have a very close family. She is one of 8 children and all but one of her siblings lives in the same town as her. She lost a sister to colon cancer in August of 06.

Hi, sorry to hear about your mom and what she and you are all going through. I can't help you with advice in this circumstance, as my husband's experience is different, but want you to know you can count on a lot of people here for support, encouragement and information. Don't give up hope . I know it's rough, but hope and faith are a cornerstone. Keep us posted. God bless

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. My mother in law just got out of the hospital from a possible blockage. There are many others that have had them. They are something to watch for when you have a bowel disease. Don't let the blockage get too bad. My MIL has chrones disease and I helped take care of her (her illeostomy and pic) when she was first dx. HUGS and hope others chime in.

Sorry, all I can offer is hope, and a sharing of faith. How is mom's attitude? Is she still willing to fight? Keep her in the loop...she should have choices, too.

Hugs, kathi
