Hi All:

A much belated Happy Thanksgiving from Beijing! We moved hotels and were left for a day without the Internet. Boy it was rough!

Sorry for the late giggles, but hey, better late than never, right?

Have a great week!

Cheers,
Ying

The Turkey Popped Out of the Oven

The Turkey popped out of the oven
and rocketed in to the air;
It knocked every plate off the table
and partly demolished a chair.
It ricocheted into a corner
and burst with a deafening boom,
Then splattered all over the kitchen,
completely obscuring the room.
It stuck to the walls and the windows,
it totally coated the floor,
There was turkey attached to the ceiling,
where there had never been turkey before..
It blanketed every appliance,
it smeared every saucer and bowl;
There wasn't a way I could stop it;
that turkey was out of control.
I scraped and I scraped with displeasure
and thought with chagrin as I mopped,
That I would never again stuff a turkey
with popcorn that hadn't been popped.

So, my dear...what did the Chinese think about these jokes??? I know, it's just another day there...same in Holland...just like the 4th of July....

Kathi:

Yup, had some Peking Duck at that very place near the Square.

Aha, the squatty potty. A few years ago, a Sports Illustrated writer who followed his wife to China, coined the phrase "white men can't squat". It's a bit of a shocker to everyone who hasn't seen one before.

Beijing is sprucing up for the 2008 Olympics, and none had benefitted more than the public bathrooms. They are all new, and complete with all the latest amenities and a none-stop cleaning lady to keep every place in tip-top shape all the time. The bathrooms are now star-rated - image Zagat rating for the loo :)

If you had come to China in earlier years, the public bathrooms would have been a sight (or should I say smell :) to behold :) I've been to places where the air was practically flammable :)

I am heading back to the US tomorrow. I will file a report on cancer survivorhood in China as soon as I am back.

The Chinese now celebrate everybody's holiday, from Thanksgiving to Carnaval. After all, it's just another reason to eat a big meal. In the case of TG, I was quite heartened to find that many actually took to heart the idea of giving thanks. Some local school organized a ceremony for kids to offer thanks to their mothers by washing their mothers' feet. In this day and age of the single (& very spoit) child, it's quite the fete. I thought it was a very touching thing.

I will put up some pictures shortly.

Cheers,
Ying

Hi Bud:

Tree, up already? Bud, you are totally hip!

I saw a Christmas display in a Chinese hotel a few years back, it had Santa on a sleigh, with 8 deers like Bambi.

Cheers,
Ying
