Juicing and chemo advice needed

I am starting chemo next week and am looking for good advice on diet during this time. I want my immune system strong!

    Water. LOTS of it. I STILL drink 2 quarts a day. I drank more the day before, day of, day after chemo infusion on both of my cancers....today, 6 months after my last infusion (bc....Taxol), I have no lingering side effects!

    Stepping on to my favorite soap box -

    In two words - Protein and sleep!

    Our bodies, what's not water is protein. Our immune system need protein and sleep to repair. Chemo will burn lot of calories, so you must take special care to replenish your system. You will have the rest of your life to eat healthy, to try alternative eating habits, but while you're on chemo, eat what you want and eat as much as you can. Most important of all, eat protein. High quality protein such as eggs and organic chicken are the best. Some fish are loaded w/ mercury - you probably don't need that right now.

    At the beginning of my chemo I bought into the vegetarian diet thing, but 4 rounds of FOLFOX destroyed my blood signs. I was not not gaining any weight and was kind of wasting away on chemo. So I dropped the vegetarian diet and started to take eating chicken seriously, about 100-200g a day. That did the trick. One months of good diet got my bloods back to normal and stayed normal for the next 8 rounds, without the need air of Nupogen or Epogen. So chicken rules!

    Also, get the Patrick Quillin book and get a good vitamin mix going. You can buy his powder, which is kind of expensive, or you can take his formula to a vitamin shop and put together something close, and save a bundle. I can recommend a good vitamin shop in the SF bay area.

    Come to think of it, I REALLY proteined-up,too!!! I ate turkey as well as chicken....Farmer Boys makes a HUGE turkey sandwich on dark bread....yummmy!

    Mushrooms (esp maitake and shitake), onions, garlic, salads, brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts, asparagus, broccoli, all colorful fruits and veggies, oatmeal......loads of water (half your body weight in ounces daily and even more around chemo days.

    Yup, ate a ton of those too & a ton of cabbage and carrots, both juiced and in solid forms.

    Cabbage is amazing as a source of liver cleansing. It erally helped me. I added it to my juicing (red cabbage) and shredded it into salads. Oddly - and I really didn't get it at first - the mix of raw veggies in salads helps keep my intestines calm. Refined foods bothered me more...Maybe my body was finally understanding what it wanted! If you can, try to juice cucumbers into your mix. It adds a ton of hydration and is really calming for ones's stomach and digestion as well (and tastes good). Also, with chemo killing all of the natural flora in your intestines, I would try to take a really good probiotic, decrease uncultured dairy products (milk -- but yogurt is okay) and try to replace with unsweetened soymilk. I didn't make the change until late into chemo, but I really noticed a difference. All the best to you - Maura

    Before surgery weighed 130 lbs (mainly muscle). After surgery, 10 July 06 weighed 114 lbs. Starged Chemo on 18 August 06. As of today (2 Oct ob) I weigh 122 lbs. I have been lucky with the FLOFOX Regime (Oxiplatin, 5FU & lecavorn (sp?). It has not made me sick.

    In the beginning I ate everything I could to gain weigh. But being on this regime you are not allowed to eat or drink cold foods or liquids, so everything for me has to be at room temp or luke/cool warm. I am now looking at adding more fruits and vegs (microwave) to my diet.

    Also, look at Kashi products. They have alot of protein and fiber. I have tried two of their cereals and breakfast bars.
