Lumbar Laminectomy

Is there anyone out there who has had this surgery? I'm scheduled for it in a week, and was wondering what to expect. Bud

    Hi Bud -

    My husband had one 25 years ago (not for cancer reasons, in case that is why you are having one) - he was in the hospital for 3-5 days (hard to remember) and then recuperated at home. He did great. When I came home from work one day and found that he had painted 4 kitchen chairs I knew he was "malingering" - he went back to work shortly thereafter. Fast forward - in March of this year he had another one - successful again, but unfortunately he developed an infection, needed a second short surgery to clean it out and then 8 weeks of IV antibiotics to get rid of the infection (he is fine now, but was a LOUSY patient!).

    Hi Bud!

    This sounds like something I had done about 9 years ago. I had a herniated disc and had it aleviated. Before I had this done I was walking bent over because of the pain and my feet were very numb. I was in the hospital for a few days and then had to take at least a week off from work. Now granted my job is done in the siting position all the time so I could ice the area quite a bit during work (bad of frozen peas works great!) I also was putting heat on it to help. I think I went to rehab for a little bit too to get flexibility back again. My back was great for awhile until it happened again in the same place. I have put this on the back burner (no pun intended. LOL) until I'm sure I'm NED for my colon cancer. The funny thing is that when I went back to work after the surgery people asked me what I had changed. I said "I'm walking upright again!!" LOL. Good luck and tell us how it goes.     My wife had this a year ago (not cancer). No problems, not a lot of post-op pain, a scar about 2 inches long. It did help with her pain but it didn't resolve all her problems with leg pain because not all her problems are in the spine. This operation consists of cutting a "v" section out of vertebrae so they can access and remove bone spurs/fragments that are pressing on the spinal cord.
