Hi all. Did I get your attention?! That's right. I am STILL in the hospital at Johns Hopkins. Had my ileostomy reversal Saturday morning and I have not had a BM yet so I am being made to stay here. Holy cow! You know how everyone has a story...a woman today told me she knew of someone who it took 7 weeks to have a BM. No way!!! I have a 13 month old at home. I am NOT waiting 7 weeks! I thought three days. I have had some gas but nothing else. Otherwise, doing okay. HAd an epidural for two days and now on very low dose tylenol/oxycodone (I know it is constipating so am not taking much). How long were you guys with reversals in the hospital???

    Hi Claudia,

I was in the hospital for 5 days, surgery on a Tuesday and released on a Sunday. Chew some gum NOW!!!!!!! Kanort on this site sent me an article about how chewing gum can help "wake up the sleeping colon" and it worked well for me. I starting passing "blood and other stuff" on Thursday nite/Friday AM (2 1/2 days after surgery). I finally got to eat a soft diet on Saturday morning, then really started "pooping". I went home the next day.

I made myself walk as soon as possible and as much as I could. I even took a shower and washed my hair before my first poop. I don't think it was a coincidence that it happened a few hours after my shower.

    hi claudia,
congats on surgery. when i had my reversal it took about 4-5 days before bm. remember did you have a enema before surgery if so you were pretty cleaned out. having gas is a good thing. let nature take it course it will come. be careful the first time, i had an accident i thought i was passing gas and it wasn't. if you have an urge hit the bathroom.

Hey Bruce......did you pour laxatives over your keyboard mate?
Claudia...I would not recommend the laxatives gal...you see here how repetetive things can get...lol! I guess all in good time. I think they call it the "spastic bowel syndrome". I like Scouty's suggestion...it is supposed to help with the "peristalsis" action of the bowel. Hope you poop shortly and get some normality back.

Ross, you are too funny. All I could think of was: "Yes, Bruce, we know you had an emema before surgery...we really do know this." Okay, back to Claudia. I was not in your shoes, but my surgeon was happy to hear that I had passed gas...meant that things were really working. All will work in time...and walking is so good to just get your body back in a natural state. Take care and all the best - Maura

    Claudia,

You are going to be in the Colondar? That's great ... just don't forget about all of us little people with all of your newfound fame.

I had a spinach pie last night with a plate full of sausages (cevapcicci) and I can't stop crapping today. Give it a try and see what happens.

    Good luck!

Claudia, my hubby had the same problem after his second surgery. He stopped the pain meds and he pooped. I know it may be hard, but maybe just until you poop.

Are you in Baltimore? I live outside Baltimore.

i pooped!!! just a bit last night 9 pm. but i got to go home. nice to be in your own bed and so great to see my baby this morning.
the gum did it!!!!! i swear.
i think what is coming out is not what has gone in in last few days. it is old from before my original surgery. very gross. but such is life. i had two gastrogaffin enemas before surgery and it is like what came out then. but i am getting gas too so i believe all is well.

rodney, i got your card!!!! love it!!! laughed so hard! are you having a great time? are you in croatia???

yes, rodney, i am in the 2007 colondar. but i am trying not to be too self conscious. i used to be beautiful, you see!!! but i am so out of shape and just do not look good after all my surgeries and treatments. but oh, well. it should be lots of fun and i am glad to be part of the cause!!!

COngratulations on what I'm sure is a first class, grade A piece of crap. I'm glad you liked the card. When I saw it I immediately thought of your ostomy reversal.

I am in Croatia right now, but I am checking all of my regular emails. I have found that the Internet cafe closest to my room is a great place to meet other travellers AND has fantastic mochas! Could you ask for more than that?
