My father pinned down the doctor for a prognosis this visit. Doctor said he has about 1 year.

My father asked about a few new treatments I read about, HAI (infusion directly to the liver) and alternating systemic chemo every other week...doc shot that down and said it's been around since the 70's and it's not really effective. Another procedure is radiation that is directed at "only the liver tumors" this is done with a new technique developed very recently at the University of Rochester medical center in the same city as my father lives and doctor said he has sent a few patients already and it is a possibility.

When first dianosed a couple of months ago they mentioned possible surgery, chemo, radiation and now it's Oh, by the way chemo is about it and you have about a year to live.

I don't know if it is insurance restrictions (he has an HMO-(Preferred Care) or what.

His first 8 week scan showed "no change."
By the way he has recurring colon cancer and mets to the liver involving both lobes and doc say too many for surgery (he didn't say that before though).

Does anyone have any advice or similar situation.

THANK YOU!!!!! I appeciate your responses.
Sue

    Sue,

Has your father considered clinical trails? The ACS Home page has a link to Emerging Med which matches patients with trials. You can also search clinicaltrials.gov for enrolling trials.
Good luck and remember...no one knows how long anyone will live. Prognosis are based on populations with similar staging. Each individual is different.

    hi sue,

please think about what scouty did to get rid of her liver mets and her tumor in her rectum. No one can ignore the awesome response she had from dietary changes and a juicing and supplement protocol. It's worth it and your Dad has "a year" to kick that cancer hinder!

    Next, forget the time frame.

I love stacy's comeback to that one. I hope she comes on here and gives it to you. It's priceless.

    peace, emily

    Hi Sue,

I couldn't help but stop by and add my 2 cents...aw heck, here's the whole dollar....

TO BEGIN WITH...make sure you tell that doctor that in addition to his prediction on your dad's life span, request a couple of winning lottery numbers. If he's THAT good, then it shouldn't be a problem!

NEXT....remind that "doctor" that expiration dates are for dairy products and coupons, NOT for people! "Odds" are for Vegas! (right all?!?)

FINALLY...get a new doctor. Tell him although you appreciate his definition of "honesty," his technique and almighty predictions can be used on another guinea pig, not your dear father!

I was a stage 4, since mine spread to my liver. Granted, I was fortunate enough to have eliminated all the cancer with surgery, chemo, and radiation. Surgery WAS an option for me. How convenient is Cornell University Hospital for your dad? At that facility is DR. FABRIZIO MICHELASSI (think it's coincidence he has "****" in his name? lol). He is one of the top three surgeons known worldwide. He performed my surgeries when he was at the University of Chicago (about 50 miles from my home), and is my personal hero.

I agree with Emily (2bhealed) that scouty, AS WELL AS EMILY, are PROVEN cases where nutrition and supplements have ELIMINATED their cancer. I will say that again, JUST BECAUSE IT IS SO INSPIRATIONAL...THEIR CANCERS WERE ELIMINATED WITH CHANGES IN DIET AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS!

So, kindly thank "Dr. Grim Reaper" for his opinion, and tell him to send you a bill which you will pay in 366 days JUST TO PROVE HIM WRONG!

Keep us posted, hope I wasn't on the soap box TOO long!

    Stacy,

If those are the types of responses we can expect from you, I will BUY you your very own soap box to stand on any damn time you want to! I will PERSONALLY remove anybody that tries to knock you off of that soap box. And I will memorize every response and more to spread that type of thought!

    Sue,

If we base our attitudes on when our "expiration date" is set for, we will expire then. Yes, I know that even those who fight the hardest still fall.

When I was diagnosed, I couldn't bear to read any information about cancer or colon cancer because as soon as I would find a survival rate I would freak out and not be able to get over anything else. AFTER I finished treatment, I learned that I can only do the best I can. If it is my time, it is my time. In the meantime, I owe it to myself, my family, my friends, and anybody else to do everything in my power to make it into the living statistics. That means opening my mind to nutritional changes and lifestyle changes. I mean, what is nutrition going to hurt. At the very least, your father has an opportunity to extend that one year into many years of quality living and more energy. At the very best, he will have awesome results and CURE, yes cure his own cancer or at least minimize it until surgery is an option.

Please, before you or your father start shopping for tombstones, go read "Beating Cancer with Nutrition," by Dr. Patrick Quillin or one of the other amazing books. Dr. Quillin does an amazing job at describing what our bodies do and what they are capable of. It even comes with an audio disk if you are not much of a reader. Make the body TOXIC to cancer; make it an environment that cancer does not thrive in. Go buy a good juicing machine and start juicing. I mean, with one year what do you have to lose? With one year, think about what you have to gain!

    My prayers are with you.

    Oh Sue,

    To quote Penn and Teller.....****!!!!!!

As Stacy says those stats are for Vegas (and trust me when I say their system is over-rated). Read my personal web site on this board if you want to know how I am kicking this **** to the curb. It can be done!!!!!

I am very close to my original "demise" date and feel and look very good right now. I say screw the numbers and help your dad to defy them. Read, read, read........learn, learn, learn......

Thanks everyone for your replies!!!!! I am reasearching all options for him now. One thing I've been trying to get that book "Beating Cancer with nutrition" for months now and Amazon keeps delaying the shipment because of no stock or something. If anyone knows another place to get one I would appreciate it.

Again...THANKS SO MUCH it really helps!!!

I got mine at Barnes and Noble.

I found this on the inside cover of the book---

    HOW To Order this book:

    BOOKWORLD 1.800.444.2524

    Nutrition Times Press, Inc 918.495.1137

Also, a really great book on intestinal health is The Makers Diet by Jordan Rubin. Most likely anything by him is good b/c he cured his "incurable" Crohn's Disease (intestinal) through diet. This book is so easy to understand and explains WHY intestinal health is KEY to optimal health. Period.

    Hope this helps!
