My father is 77 and has lung cancer which has spread to the bone, he also has a crush 3rd vertebrate and tumors on his spine, ribs, and femurs, and the mass in his lung is 9.5 cm X 5 cm. The doctors say he is in stage IV, and that the only thing they can do is by doing chemo & radiation they can keep it from spreding further and ease the pain. He ways 117 lbs down from 141, They say with chemo he needs to drink a lot of fluids. We try to get him to drink more fluids but he will not. Right now they have chemo scheduled for next 5 weeks and radiation for the next 14 days. Any advice at all would be helpful. And any educated guess on how long he would survive with and without treatment

Thanks Jim

Hi Jim

i am very sorry to hear about your dad. my dad had cancer in almost the exact same places as your dad does. my dad passed away feb of this year. he was diagnosed the oct before. he was stage 4 when diagnosed. the started almost straight away on the chemo and radiation. he had no real sickness from the chemo but was in a lot of pain from the bone cancer. he had lost a lot of weight before the chemo anyway and lost more during chemo but the steorids bloated him out. my dad was 53. the chemo didnt stop my dads cancer from speading but did ease the pain. my dad lived all in all 4.5 months with treament. all i can say is that everyone is different. it all depends on your outlook also. it is important for your dad to remain positive. this can make a big difference. we noticed that my dad almost "gave up" from when he was first diagnosed. i have a friend that recently had cancer and was stage 4 (not lung cancer) and the cancer had spread everywhere, bones, brian, heart, both lungs etc... and is now currently in remission. he had the last rights three times but would not give up!

good luck to you and your dad and you are in my thoughts and prayers.
