Morning guys. A friend of mine is scheduled for a biopsy of his prostate and asked what is the normal or expected number of samples that should be taken. It's been 4 years since I had mine and I don't remember, not sure I ever knew. When one turned up positive that was enough. If any of you happen to know please let me know. |

Re: Biopsy of Prostate
Roger: Here are passages from "Dr. (Patrick)Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer", pub 2001. Pg 134, "It used to be that urologists took four measly samples of tissue, one from each quadrant of the prostate. Then the number increased to six . . . Now it's clear that taking ten or twelve samples is better still." And on pg 158. "For starters, if you did not have twelve samples taken during your biopsy, you should have this done now." In my case in 2001, the doctor took eight samples and found the cancer.

Re: Biopsy of Prostate
I had my biopsy done back in November, 2004. 4 samples were taken. To be honest, the sample-taking process was very painful. However, from the 4 samples, a tiny corner of cancer was discovered. Eight days ago, my prostate was removed, and I am doing very well.

A year ago, I had an in office biopsy. 12 Very painful samples were taken, all were good. This September I had another taken, suspicious PSA. This was done in hospital under general anesthetic. 39 samples were taken And only one was bad. I had 78 rad seeds implanted in November.

Re: Biopsy of Prostate
Hi Rog,
Probably too late to be meaningful but FYI I had 6 double samples (doubles are normal) taken of the prostate & 1 each in the seminals & they only found it in 2 of the prostate ones but post surgical analysis provided info that it (Ca) was present in one of the seminals also showing that no matter how many are taken it's easy to miss too!!
