Persistent coughing following radiotherapy

My mum -a survivor of 22yrs- has now Stage IV BC. She had developed mets to lungs. She underwent both chemo and radiotherapy during Spring 2002. Following this, she coughed for months, until New Year. We were told that it was due to the radiation. I guess they meant radiation pneumonitis. She had no symptoms other than shortness of breath until last March when she got a serious back pain. It was diagnosed as spinal cord compression. So she had to undergo another radiation treatment in April and her coughs are back. Maybe I should have waited until New Year and write this if they wouldn't disappear by then. But this time she coughs more and it makes her feel very tired. Is there anybody out there who experienced this side effect of radiation? How did you deal with coughing?

    I personally did not have these symptoms but my oncologist mentioned this as a possible side effect of treatment. He wanted me to get back to him immediately for further follow-up treatment if I experienced coughing for an extended period. Hope that helps to some small degree and that others answer who have more personal experience to supply. Take care. Wimpy
