Her2-Neu confusion

My biopsy pathology report and supplemental FISH showed that I was Her2 positive 2.0 (weak-positive). I just got my pathology from my mastectomy and it says that I am Her2 negative 1.1. I'm concerned since this can have a major effect on my treatment. The oncologist called both pathology labs in from of my husband and myself, and they are going to conference and decide how to resolve this, but if they retest it will delay the beginning of chemo, and Dr. would like to get treatments started, since other indicators showed cancer was agressive and slight node involvement. Has anyone else ever had this happen? It's really thrown me and I'm not sure how to proceed. Thanks for your help. BJaye

You will get the same treatment in either case so proceed with the chemo - that's my suggestion since adriamycin is considered first line against Her2 neu. They can still retest the tissue, I think, and the same treatment will be given in either case. It is with metastases that treatments changes for HER2 and often only for those who are 3+ as I am.

    Hi BJaye,

My original pathology report said I was Her2 negative (1+). That was done with the IHC test. I had them redo it with the FISH test and I came out positive 2.8. I believe the FISH test supercedes the IHC test. I don't see the harm in having it redone a third time if that's what they want to do, but with the FISH test. What stage and all are you? What jeancmici said is right though, you will probably start with the AC in either case. I'm stage IIIA and began herceptin with the taxol afterward as part of a clinical trial. Good luck.
