Off Topic - 'Happy May Day'...

Are you English as am I as they don't celebrate May Day here in U.S. I believe?

This morning at school, some of my colleagues and I were talking about what we used to do on May 1, when we were young:  make little paper May baskets (I forget what we put in them -- maybe an early spring flower), sneak over to a neighbor's house, hang the basket on the door handle, ring the doorbell, and run.

Some of my colleagues (as does my mother) remember as little kids doing dances around the May pole outdoors at school.

I think these are traditions that are fading away, though.

May Day - for me, it brings back both fun memories and SCARY ones.

In school, here in the States, we always did the May pole, made baskets and had a fun day.  Unfortunately though, for me, the day was never free of fears.   We had lived in a very Socialist/Communist area of France when I was in grades 1 - 3 (1952 -1955).  Daddy was stationed at a very small USAFD (U. S. Air Force Depot) in an area that even at the best of times, many did not want any Americans there - period.

No one was allowed out of their houses, shutters had to be closed all day for what protection they allowed.  I was one of the 'lucky ones' living in the villa we did.  It was owned by the Prefect/Mayor, so it was not bothered/marked.  All the other houses that Americans lived in were 'atacked' to varying degrees though no one was physically harmed.  Daddy was not home as he was one of the 2 officers assigned to evacuation if needed, so he had to be on base in case our 2 tanks had to be brought out with a convoy to get all dependants to a safe place.

I do believe that May Day should be a day celebrated for positive and support it being done that way.   But the child in me - can never forget what I lived through - nor should I.

May Day is a great day to celebrate possitively.  That's why I did not post until it was past for this year.
