I feel I am a lucky person to have been approved to participate in a clinical trial for a less damaging radiation treatment. I had been seeking treatment with protons for that same "less damaging" reason, but due to various factors, getting insurance approval was simply taking too long. I start Tuesday.

Involved Field Elective Volume De-Intensification Radiation Therapy for Head and Neck Cancer (INFIELD)

    Good News

To be treated successfully with a lower dose of radiation is great to hear.  It made a difference with my teeth not rotting away.  Standard treatment for SCC is 70 gy.  I was hit with 54 gy's and it seemed to do the job.  Just had some teeth pulled due to other reasons and my jaw healed just fine.  No cavities yet on the gum line either and it's been 5 years since my last IMRT.

The reason my dose was lower was due to not having SCC but a rarer one called mucoepidermoid carcinoma.  No cancers are good but some can be less harmful than others.

Hopefully this study can prove the lower gy's are effective in treating SCC cancers.  That would eliminate som much trouble later on.

Please keep this post updated for all to read.  Thanks!

My father is about to start immunotherapy which is same as clinical t I think. He also should get 6 radiology low dosage because he already received 35. His base of tongue cancer is growing. Last chemo helped a little. Will immunotherapy help or this the end ?
