    Ileostomy
    winney -

I have an ileostomy. The ileum ends and exits your side, and
expels the waste into your pouch, just as it once did into your
colon. It's normally the consistency of oatmeal, or thick gravy.
(But don't eat it, save it for relatives you don't like).

Food usually takes about four hours to pass from your mouth
to the start of the colon. So you should expect to see output
    more quickly than four hours.

When they give you an ileostomy, you usually lose what is called
the ileocecal valve. That valve is part of the colon, and has two jobs.
    1. It prevents "backflow" from the colon into the ileum, this preventing
bacteria from contaminating your small intestines.
    2. Allows the brain to control the flow from the small intestines into
    the large intestines.

Without that valve, ileostomates see output much quicker, and
more loss of fluids more rapidly.

As an ileostomate, you should try to drink water frequently, on an
hourly basis, at least 4-6 oz. Your small intestines can only absorb
a specific percentage per hour, so drinking too much will just pass
through. You should drink more frequently, not just "more".

Ileostomates have a greater problem staying hydrated, and dehydration
will sneak up on us quickly. You can't wait until your thirsty, and urine
color won't always indicate your proper hydration. Your kidneys
will suffer before you see the signs of it. It's one of the reasons
ileostomates are prone to kidney/bladder stones. If you begin to feel
tired, weak, and urinate small amounts, you're into dehydration.
Drinking V8 juice can help restore potassium and sodium levels,
but if you're too dehydrated you'll need a trip to the ER for fluids.
    (BTDT too many times)

You will find that high carb foods result in thick output, and low carb
foods (like meat) will result in a very liquid output. Try to eat good
things, combinations of meat and veggies and fruit. Your body will not be
getting as much out of your intake as it did before, because the
product will be moving through the intestines much quicker (due to
    that missing valve).

With an ileostomy, you should change or empty your pouch when
it is no more than 1/3 full.

And.... with an ileostomy, you should expect to be waking up during
the night, every night, to empty that pouch. It's part of an ileostomate's
life, and there's little to do to fix it....

I try to eat a big breakfast, and a very big lunch, making supper the
smallest meal and always before 5pm. Not eating anything but a very
small snack (an apple) after 6pm will give you more time between
    empties at night.

You'll do ok... but things will be different.

    Stay well!

    Hi Winnie the poo
    (my favorite childhood book)
John hit on most everything but I wanted to add acouple things.
Make sure you chew your food really well, the shortened time passing thru causes
some things to come out the same way they went in so chew well to avoid blockage.
also I found if you put a couple drops of a non alcoholic mouthwash in the bag after you empty it ,it really helps the smell(doesn't make it smell good, just tones it down.
Crest mouthwash is what I use most others have alcohol.

    john and kate gave great
john and kate gave great info. My ileo was reversed 2 months ago but I had high output, mostly liquid and was constatnly going to ER for dehydration...i was skeleton skinny, so weak and bony and had no appetite.

about a month before my reversal, they put me on lomotil and opium tincture, those 2 combined is what FINALLY thickened and slowed my output (almost too thick to clean bag as well as when it was liqyuidy)

so follow the tips john and kate gave you and take it from there.

    good luck

    you probably already know
    you probably already know this,
but when I first got my ileostomy
the nurse that showed me how to change bag gave me the info for a colostomy.
and told me to leave a space around the stoma.
for ileostomys, since it does not travel thru the large colon,
it is full of digestive juices which are caustic and very iritating to the skin.
make sure the wafer fits snug ,but not tight around the stoma.
also you can use a squirt bottle to rinse bag after you empty it.

    Foods and things
    Hi Winney !

Just make sure you chew the food well !

Blockages only happen in tighter than usual places, but chewing
can help avoid a blockage. Things like "adhesions" are worse.

An adhesion happens when your intestine sticks to another organ,
sometimes kinking it, making it more difficult for food to pass through.

The intestine is often at a hard angle where it exits your body, also
providing a place for food to get stuck. Chewing well can help
    avoid that problem also.

As far as smells? I don't know, none of it smells all that great.
But no matter how bad I smell, it is still better than my brother-in-law.
(sorry, had to toss that in)

Remember, that any pills, medications, vitamins, etc, can't be the
"slow release" kind, because they'll end up in the pouch before
they dissolve completely. Liquid is best, and chewing the pills,
    a good second best.

I don't take vitamins, since it's better to eat the actual item.
The real goodness of the veggie is all of the veggie. But after the
industrial machines get through pulverizing, pounding, and modifying
the veggie, it ain't a veggie anymore... It's dust. Usually near worthless
dust, until they add all that test-tube designed, factory made powder
and form it into pill form. Yummie! MM-MM-good! One glass
of chemically fixed water, and we're good to go!

    So anyway.... there ya' go!

    Think healthy!

    DONT EAT -------?
    PEANUTS!!!

    don't eat
or pineapple, raisins, seeds and skins. Other than that my surgeon said something that makes a fair amount of sense - "You can eat anything you want, as long as you are willing to live with the consequences."
