Will my butt remember what to do???

I got a reconnection date. Friday Dec 3rd my super doc will reconnect my *** and I can get this damn bag off my belly.

This morning, with my head now clear for contemplation, it came to me that as we age we forget how to do things if we don’t do them every day. By the time I get reconnected, it will be 100 days that I did not even fart much less crap. Will my *** remember????

You know that famous sculpture of the thinking man. That will be me on the john.

Very glad that you have got a reconnect date.

I have no doubt that your butt will remember what to do, the when it does it may need a little more training.

But hey, you are the inventive type. Just take some of that fix-all (duct tape) and tape one of those bags over it until it gets the timing right!

How goes the deer hunting?

The is the first year in a long time that my dad hasn't been. He is 85 and still capable of going but the property where they hunted got sold.

Good luck with the deer and the reconnect!

Believe me your butt will know what to do. It took my bowels about a week to wake up but you will get there. Glad you have your date.

Good luck on your reconnect Kerry!! My husband Robert will have his done mid Dec after 2 years...was only supposed to be for 3 or 4 months....progression kept setting the date forward. Just waiting on the Avastin to clear his system or it would have been done last week when he developed a blockage due to an unknown parastomal hernia.

You can officially be called an old fart again in a few weeks!! lol

Good luck on the hunt

Hi Kerry, I just had my bag reversed 1 week ago. It seems like the easier I am on my stomach (small frequent meals that are easy on it) the easier it goes through. But even then, I'm still running for the bathroom, just a matter of when. The pizza was a bad, bad, bad idea. Walk a lot in the hospital,it can help to wake things up. Oh, and try using your wife's pads moved toward's the back a little. They can come in handy if you realized too late what's coming. Good luck and congratulation's :)

I'm going to fill you in on a Kerry thingie. His wife ... AKA Scary old woman (his words not mine) is so resourceful that she will take his recycled log splinters, soak them in something that smells extra nice, soften them into the finest fiber and make him organic butt pads of his very own!

Kerry, your butt will remember maybe a little too well for a little bit. Hang in there. I'm sure you'll keep us updated in good ol' Kerry fashion.

Your butt will remember, it is just the order of things that may be off. Be prepared for a few "accidents" as the feeling of having to go will come upon you and you will have to go now. Start clenching and exercisisng your sphincter muscle now and all the way until your surgery. Have plenty of cottonelle flushable wipes in the house as you will become sore from all the action that will be taking place. and do try and think about putting some sort of pad in your underwear just in case, it make clean up alot easier. and the most important piece of advice "NEVER TRUST A FART". Just trust me on this!

" Will my *** remember????"

Just get your Azz in gear Kerry! You'll remember...just like riding a bicycle, you never forget.

On another note, my daughter almost hit a deer, according to her a "BIG buck", on a Seattle street the other night. Want her to go back & get it for you?

Have a great weekend Kerry!

It took me forever to retrain mine. I had to sprint to the toilet all the time. My body simply couldn't tell the difference between gas and a movement. Had I gambled I would have lost every time. My colon still doesn't work in unison. The lower resected section always seems to lag behind and a typical movement requires 3 or 4 trips to the toilet to complete. I doubt I will ever be as before but it has gotten much better.

no other way to say it, so here it is. ask for supositories. they will wake up the rectum before the reconnect and when they disolve it will help the anus squeeze to keep the liquid in.and release on command. even if your stoma gets constapated its a good way to trick the mind in trying to pass hard stool(from what ive seen you must have an intact rectum for this tequnike to work). it works because the rectum creates mucas, so it tricks the brain into thinking it is getting ready to pass stool.

Good suggestion! I use suppositories to pass stool on a daily basis, something down there just isn't working right anymore. That's a good suggestion for retraining a new rectum, although the liquid it produces might be harder to control at first. Something to think about.

Heck Yes your azz will remember. Like riding a bike, might fall a few times, then you will sail away.

Take care - Tina

First buy some that will loosely fit you especially until your abs recover from the surgery. It will save lots of embarrassing moments and messes. Have washclothes ready in every bathroom or handy if you are out for easy clean up since "it" will hit when you least expect it.

Second, I think it depends on which part of your colon you had resected and how long you've had your bag. The lower of the 6 ft colon removed the tougher it will be on the re-education as will the longer you have not exercised that area. That last 12-18 inches of the colon does the majority of the absorbsion of liquid so you have a firm stool versus " runny diarrhea" so the removal of the lower sections will be tougher.

I had my bag over 2 years and lost the last foot of my colon so it took my innards 1-2 years to re-educate and adjust. The first year was much like John's, where my anus didn't know the difference between gas and the real thing. EXTREMELY frustrating at times especially that first year. I often thought about getting it back but now almost 5 years since that surgery I have no regrets but it will never be like it was. I go for months without an accident then have 3 like I did last week.

I do find it interesting that your doc is taking it down while you are still fighting cancer. I wouldn't allow it until I thought my body was done fighting cancer. I wanted my bod fighting cancer, not recovering from significant surgery. I thought it was too tough for it to do both.

And by the way Kerry, the sound of your farts will sound much differently at first and change over time too!

kerry, when you have that first fart, it is a big deal. LOL I had my ileostomy for 3 mths and then had a reversal. Your butt does need a little muscle retraining because those muscles have not been used for so long. I got an ileus after i got home, took mag citrate and fixed the problem, just remember to make sure you are keeping tract of your B/M's. I still received chemo for another 6 mths after my reversal and did fine. give it time, I tried numerous meds till i found what worked for me to keep me regular, a year later and i only take senakot once a day and am pretty regular now... so, don't get discouraged. GET YOUR BUTT IN GEAR. LOL petrina

Hi Petrina, I just had my reversal 10days ago. My body seems so confused to what it's supposed to do. It fools me, when I think all is going nice and well....bam there I am rushing to the bathroom. I do know it's way too early for me to expect much more, it just fools me often. It's so good to hear stories like your's and the others, giving ideas and hope for the future. I will get there too!

Thanks, Gail

Thanks everyone. You have helped me to be prepared. Not even counting all the lurkers out there that have been helped. That is what makes you all and this place so great.
