Complex Cyst

I was just diagnosed with a 4.5 cm by 4.3 cm renal cyst on my right kidney. We do not know the category yet, but I do go in Wednesday for a Contrast CT, and meet with the urologist after that. I am quite terrified and panicked, and I am trying to understand what this means. I have looked at the different categories, and I understand the differences, but I am still scared. Any help or advise would be appreciated!

    Kidney Cancer is 100% curable.
Dear Madiarsg: I took the liberty of reading your blog to see where you were coming from. A little over 8 years ago I was told I had Kidney Cancer. I was devistated. I was approaching 59 years old. I knew nothing about Kidney Cancer. I was told I had to have surgery to have the kidney removed. The surgery was not fun. Guess what? I have been fine for 8 years. The week I got out of the hospital we scheduled a Caribbean Cruise. This January will be our 9th annual Caribbean Cruise. A lot of the aches and pains I had before the surgery I no longer have. For those of us unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with Kidney Cancer and fortunate enough to have the surgery before the Cancer spreads we are cured. Oh yes the doctors schedule CYA C-T scans every year and state that there is a possibility of recurrance, but for the most part that is it. Therefore if the doctor determinies that your cyst is of the size etc. that it is or is likely to turn into Cancer be thankful that if this is taken care of by surgery alone you will be as close to 100% cured as possible.Take it from some one who has been there and done that and is scared of blood tests. Me. Best of luck with your diagnosis and if it does turn out to be Kidney Cancer or likely Kidney Cancer, get the surgery behind you and get on with the rest of your life.Best of luck. Icemantoo

    Thank You
Thank you so much for your kind words, I have been in a panic since I found out about the cyst, and in an even bigger panic as I looked up everything on renal cysts. Especially about how biopsies aren't done since it can cause the cancer (if it is there) to spread. I go in tomorrow for the test, but it will be next Friday before I know the results, sooner if it is bad. I am not a religious person, but I am praying that this is benign, or if it is malignant, that it has not spread anywhere besides the cyst.

    Madi, important test to
Madi, important test to detemrine grade of cyst/tumor in kidney. when your cyst was categorized as "simple cyst" some time ago, it was not going to develop into cancer and been removed at that time.

    Complex cyst below

A system to grade kidney cysts by their appearance on CAT scan has been developed, which help doctors to predict which complex kidney cysts are more likely to have kidney cancer inside. This system is known as the Bosniak classification. The Bosniak classification provides specific definitions to classify cysts by the risk of kidney cancer.
