Ok so I just got off the phone with my onc and she told me I have exhausted all anti- nausea meds. I have tried zofran, ativan, emend and compazine. All work until disconnection day. That when it's all down hill. Can anyone tell me if there is any other medication I can try or other remedy that works. I have chemo tomorrow so will be disconnected Sunday and can't tell you how much I'm dreading Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Thank you in advance to all who reply :)

Many people on here swear by marijuana, I think there is a thread about that on here now. It does help nausea from what I understand. Try it, Patti

I'm sorry you're having a rough time. I also have late stage nausea -nausea that rears up after disconnection. Emend has worked for me. Are you getting a bag of emend with treatment and taking the emend pill and steroid on day 2 and 3?
Check out the thread "Merino and medical marijuana and Nausea." That's where I'm headed if the emend stops working.

    anti-emetics
I find it hard to believe they are just leaving you hanging on this issue! It's the number one reason patients decide to stop the chemo that could save their lives! They need to figure something out! The only thing that finally worked for me was the Emend-decadron combo. I had tried Zofran, Kytril, phenergan, compazine. Do you get Aloxi (I think that's it) at infusion? There's a new Sancuso patch which i think is Zofran in a continuous transdermal and has shown some good results. I would definitely try marijuana if nothing else was working. Toss me off to jail, officer, but you'll be cleaning up the mess when the marijuana wears off!

Good luck with this, there is a solution out there for you.

Patty, I too always felt worse after they took the pump off. What I found that helped me was taking ibprofrom, now my dr did'nt like me taking it but it always seemed to make me feel better.

You know what they only give me steroids on the day of infusion. Could that be the problem? I mean are you suppose to take emend with a steroid?

My husband has been trying to talk me into medical marijuana for weeks. I thought about it but I'm scared. Tried it a couple of times when I was younger and had some bad trips. I get to paranoid and feel like I'm gonna die cause I feel like my heart beats to fast!!:) crazy I know but that's what happens

My experience is exactly the same. I tried it a few times when I was younger, and ended up in the fetal position. Here's how I see it. If I try it now and it makes me sick, how will I even tell. A good friend of mine, who is an enthusiastic recreational pot smoker told me that there is lots of different kinds of pot and more to the point - lots of bad pot out there. If you live in an MM state getting the right stuff won't be a problem. If not, put your husband on the case. I bet lots of more "experienced' folks will be able to better advise. But like I said, if the emend stops working, I'm blowin' a fatty.

I take 8MG of Dexamethason on days 2 and 3 with the emend. That could be the problem. Definitely ask your Dr. before treatment tomorrow. Let me know what he'she says.

    ginger
    Fresh ginger works very well
Juice it fresh, about the size of your thumb. It is very strong so you'll need to add something to it. I like a few lemons and apples.
You can also just add hot water a lemon slice and honey. It will ease your nausea. You can drink it whenever you feel sick.
Something else you might do. Trust me I know it sucks but getting up and walking outside helps a bit. You also might want to adjust your diet prior to treatment. I always switched my diet up 3-4 days before. I ate lite, mostly fruits and veggies. I also hydrated myself very well.

John is right about the hydration....
At first I hydrated myself real well and it seemed to help a great deal, then it got to where I didn't want anything at all and I paid for it...Sipping water constantly kept me feeling better at first but then I quit ......I really think though hydration is a main key in reducing the nausea.........Love Hope and Hiccups........Buzz

I have a lot of trouble
But here is what works to mostly get me through:

Infusion day: Decadron, Aloxi and Emend, all via IV.
Day #2, #3 AND #4 I take Emend pills. Standard is just the 3-day dose of Emend, but I get so sick disconnect and the next day that I take an extra day of Emend. One cycle I tried taking it on day #5, but it didn't help at all that day. I also get fluids on day #5 if I'm struggling (I have to go in for Neupogen shot that day anyway). And some nights I take Ativan. It does make me very sleepy, so I don't like to take it unless I'm having trouble getting to sleep and am nauseated.

Possibly an extra day of Emend might help you?

(Zofran gives me headaches and doesn't help. I'm allergic to Compazine. I got Kytril via IV on day #5 once and it helped.)

    That was then
this is now....Different circumstances entirely and I think you may find that it is nothing like the experience you had then.

I understand it's milder when eaten in baked goods yet just as effective. Eating it baked to get baked! Never thought of it that way
    ;-)
    good luck...

    Emend
costs $180 per pill. I know that is w/o insurance, but $180 per pill!!!
They all try to get the benefits of what marijuana offers for a fraction of the price plus, unlike emend it actually makes you feel kind of good and even happy while it rids you of nausea and increases appetite. Emend did neither for me.

I know there are as many opinions on this as there are ways to get through it.

    Hi
Kytril (sp?) is the one that finally worked for me, there are a lot of anti nausea meds out there, and in different combinations,I can't bellieve your doctor said there is nothing else to try. Hope you find some relief soon.

    Anzamet
For what it is worth, I don't see many getting this but George got a IV bag of Anzamet for nausea at infusion time and he never had nausea. I know everyone is differnt but he never had to use anything else. Tina

    HI
So sorry you are feeling blue,
If you are on OXI have the doctor reduce the dosage.
My hubby used to be really sick with nausea until his doctor reduce his OXI dosage.
He also uses ginger capsules 2 with each meal and it works better for him than
    any of the anti-nausea meds.
It won't hurt to try, it cost so much less than the meds.
    Good Luck

    No more nausea
    Hi Lilmiss,

Just wanted to let you know that I had the same problems with nausea and tried all of the meds you have. I live in CA so marijuana is legal for medicinal purposes. It did the trick. I would take 1 or 2 puffs and the nausea would stop immediatley. You are right about different kinds. The dispensary I got mine from was very informative and had me try several different kinds to see what was most effective. I don't think I would have made it all the way through treatment without the marijuana. Let me know if you h ave any questions.

    Blessings to you,

    Debbie (gramma)

I take 8mg of Dexamethason with Emend on days 1-3, and then anzemet and the dex on days 4 and 5. The dex is a steroid.
