325 Mg of Asprin

I was lectured by the nurse preparing me for my colonsocpy yesterday. She said that I should not be taking 325 mg a day of asprin, so I have a call in to my oncologist to see if it's a no, no. FYI for those taking 325 mg of asprin, you may want to ask also. She stated asprin at that strength is not good, especially those with liver problems and or/desease.

She lost her husband to colon cancer a couple years back.

    I took 3 tablets of asprin,and still do,the only time I couldn't take any was during chemo,and radiation,otherwise the dr. said it was no problem.I have taken it daily for years.I guess it's up to the drs.,good luck.

    Aspirin
    I take one baby aspirin per day. My doctor's recommendation. At first she said I should be taking an aspirin a day and later in the visit clarified that it is one baby aspirin per day. There is a history of heart problems in my family and that is the reason she recommends a baby aspirin per day. George does not take any aspirin. Tina

    Asprin a day keeps the grim reaper away
    I take one 325mg a day and have for many years. It keeps my arthritis in check. I only had to stop before surgeries and the colonoscopies. The doc told me that was fine.

    I read an article that said thoes of us that take asprin have better outcome with colon cancer. However I would listen to your doc. I am wired different then most people.

    My onc said 325 mg
    Studies show that it takes the 325 mg strength to make a difference in prevention of cc. Up to 30% reduction in recurrence risk for Stage III.

    Heading to dinner with gal pals so don't have time to find the paper/ link. TTYL

    What I Heard...
    My new onc at the new hospital told me after lung surgery to start right away on 325mg a day aspirin and NOT 81mg aspirin - I asked him 3 different times and got the same answer each time.

    Apparently 325mgs make the difference in colon cancer recurrence and to slow down the growth of polyps.

    I see him in another week, so I'll ask again - have not started yet, but will if he recommends it.

    Aspirin and colorectal cancer:
    Supposedly it is most effective for those whose tumor's are/were known as "COX-2 overexpression." In any event, always check with your oncologist first......Steve

    I am not allowed to take asperin or any other nsaid, because of platelet problems.
    I know the daily dose for those with a history of HEART problems is 81mg (1 baby asperin)
    I did not know it was different for colon cancer
    I stand corrected.:-)

    Interesting
    When I went to my 325 mg of ASPRIN, B12 DROPS, CALCIUM, VITAMIN D3, VITAMIN C AND FISH OIL, MY ACID REFLEX WENT COMPLETELY AWAY. I HAVE HAD ACID REFLEX FOR ABOUT 5-7 YEARS. NOT SURE WHICH MADE IT GO AWAY BUT ONE DID.

    EXCUSE THE CAPS.......ON MY WAY OUT THE DOOR, HUBBY IS SICK, NEED TO GET SOME MEDS.

    I'm not on chemo, or I would not take any of these supplements. You know my ONC has not called me. I need to follow-up.

    Dosage not clear
    I find the issue of dosage not clear. I have two articles written by the same researchers that
    seem to say contradictory things. In the Chan and Fuchs article of 2008 (Gastroenterology 2008, 134 pages 21-28) the authors say:
    "The apparent benefit associated with aspirin use was substantially greater with increasing dose...men who used the equivalent of 0.5-1.5 standard aspirin (325 mg) per week did not have significantly lower risk of colorectal cancer (multivariate relative risk (RR), 0.94, 95% CI 0.75-1.18)..."
    They go on to say that the 6-14 aspirin per week had a multivariate RR of 0.72, and >14 aspirin had a RR of 0.3 (based on 4 cases).

    However, in the recent JAMA article by Chan and Fuchs (JAMA, 302 pages 649-659) they claim:
    "the association between postdiagnosis aspirin use and survival was modestly dose-responsive". In this table, the adjusted HR (hazard ratio) is 0.57 for 0.5-5 aspirin per week, and 0.46 for >= 6 aspirin (actually the same within the statistical uncertainties). They do claim the COX2 status is important, and differentiate on this basis.

    Based on this information, it seems that there is a clear benefit to taking aspirin, but the dosage level is not established. I suppose it is safest to take around 1000 mg a week to avoid complications but receive some benefit.
