Raditation followup not sure---

Hello everyone!
It's been a while since I've been away from this post and now I'm back to ask you guys for your experience or opinion about this. This past summer I only had one chemotherapy and got bad side effects that I got colon infection and abscess so they've decided to stop the treatment. I got better few months later with antibiotics. I'm relieved that I have no sign of disease thru ct scan. My doctors are concern about me whether I need radiation or not cuz I'm very sensitive to treatments. They recommended me to see radiologist to see what's her opinion about this. I need your input whether I need radiation or not.

    Reddie, Tough decisions to make, for sure.

    My two cents are:
    1. Check the NCCN guidelines to see what is recommended for your type, grade, stage of CA
    2. Have you thought about a second opionion?

    Hey, Reddie,

    I would suggest that you at least go and listen to what the radiologist has to say. Explain that you need to go home and consider your options or perhaps get a second opinion, and then if you can afford to do so, get a second opinion. Also, as Mary Ann mentioned check the NCCN Guidelines for your particular cancer and go on line to see if there have been any recent studies done on disease free survival following radiation vs not having radiation. I know for some stages of cancer radiation can have a surprisingly less favorable outcome. Don't know about your situation though.

    Look on line, maybe call a few universities that are doing studies to see what they have to say.

    Asking us is akin to asking your neighbor, who has a car like yours how to fix the engine. He or she only knows from their own personal experience vs the guy who actually went to the automotive school. We're oodles of fun and we love you, but in the end, what the heck do we really know, except that we care?

    Hi Claudia and Mary Ann,

    Thanks for your feedback and express your thoughts about this. How can I check on NCCN Guidelines? Can't wait to find out the results of my blood test this Friday and see what the outcomes are. On Nov. 14th I will see the radiologist for her opinion about this.

    That long thing up there is the url for the current guidelines. You just highlight, copy and paste in the address thing and it's yours. AND----you can print just certain pages so you always have answers to those late night, don't want to turn on the computer questions.

    Hi Reddie!

    I think you should see the radiation oncologist and come armed with questions. Listen to what they have to say. Radiation can have long term side effects on normal tissue; but it can also save your life. I went for a second opinion before choosing a course of radiation. You could make the appt now for a second opinion. I think it helps to have someone with you at appointments; it's easy to get anxious and forget what they told you. Hang tough!
