Surgery Wednesday

Hello Everyone,

First, thank you for sharing your lives on this board. It has helped me understand so much as caregiver to my husband. He doesn't always let me "in" to what he is thinking so this board is great. Even though I know we are all different, we somehow are alot the same (as Sundance has shown us)!
Anyway, my husband's resection surgery is Wednesday and we will then find out if he will have a permanent or temp ostomy along with other things after waiting all summer. We are both scared but digging down for courage and strength each day. It is truly a life-changing experience and I just ask for your prayers. Thanks to the daily bloggers - you know who you are! You'll never know how many people you are helping.

    Hi Diane!
    I justwanted to wish you luck in your hubby's surgery, hope all goes well, I know how scary it can be, I had to have emergency surgery from a perforated colon which led me to have to have a temporary colostomy, and actually, it wasn't that bad. I have learned to accept it as part of a regular routine, like brushing your hair and teeth, it's not the best thing, but it will save lives. If you have any questions, let us know, a few of us here do have it :)

    Hi dear Diane,best luck and best wishes to you and your husband with his surgery.I hope the surgery will be done successfully and he is going to have a speedy recovery.My husband just had his rectum resection almost 20 days ago.His suegery was much longer than what we told,so be ready for a longer waiting in the waiting room.It is normal that the surgery may take longer,just stay calm,don't go panic.Before the surgery,I packed some things for my husband, like his laptop,cellphone,phone charger,bedroom shoes,a note book and pen,shaver,cotton swabs,tooth brush and toothpaste,mouth rinse,and some other bathroom things(but it turned out the hospital offered all the bathroom things).The first night after surgery was the worst,after that thing would get better by each passing day.When your husband is ready for discharge from the hospital,please pack a PJ bottom for him,either way he is going to have a ostomy,so wearing a comfortable pants is very important wheather you have a long drive home or not.It's going to be perfect if you also have a pillow for him,just in case any sneeze on the way back home,this way he can hold the pillow to protect his incision.

    Diane, best wishes and luck to you and your husband, my surgery is scheduled for Wed also, I will have a permanant colostomy. My husband is very sweet and good to me, as I know you are to your husband, remember to take care of you, he has lots of people taking care of him. Remember to eat, sleep, be good to you.     Hi Diane

    Thanks for your comment about me :) I'm glad I was able to let you know that things will be ok and it's just normal with all we go through - I just wanted everybody to see that and used myself as an example.

    I wish you and your husband the best for your surgery this Wed - I will be hoping for a terrific outcome and good recovery for him - and you.

    Katie: I have not gotten a chance to say hello, but HI to you and nice to meet you. I also will be sending you positive energy for your surgery Wednesday as well.

    I don't believe that we should "walk alone" during surgery time and so if you don't mind, I'll be riding along with you and Diane on your journies.

    Hoping that both surgeries go quicker and easier than was expected. Mine took longer and I woke up with an ostomy. I am cancer free, my resection was Feb 19, 2007.

    Well, I will have Katie and Kevin (my hubby) on my mind Wednesday that is for sure! We will have to compare notes a little later. I hope you both have a fantastic recovery. Thanks for your good thoughts.

    ...I wanted to wish you well in your surgery as well! Good Luck! We'll be thinking of you! remember both of you, to walk as much as possible, it will wake the bowels up faster.

    Everything will be fine....
    an ostomy either temp or perm is no big deal in the grand scheme of things. I have a permanent one and its just something else to do about 5 minutes out of each day. It doesn't affect anything I do, (except maybe redirect my farts) LOL....but the main thing is quality of life and staying healthy. an ostomy is small taters, and if you don't get one then I have one you can borrow for a little bit but I want it back....No seriously, its another stopping point in the journey and it gets you closer to your objective...Its something that will be behind you in 24 hours and you will be fine......You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.....Clift

    I know it will be a huge relief to get through tomorrow and on the other side of this uncertainty. I truly loved my surgery days- man, go to sleep, wake up with great pain meds. My family are the ones who had to worry and wait! Mine was an emergency resection, a planned one, but went early due to obstruction. I knew minutes before surgery that I would have a temporary colostomy, as the ostomy nurse was there drawing on me for the stoma. At the time, it was, in all seriousness the absolute LEAST worry in my mind. And truly continued to be that way the entire time I had one. I totally agree with Buzz that in the grand scheme of life and living, it really is small taters. I did have a reversal, but ya know, if I couldn't have, it would have been fine.
