I have stage T3b PC, gleason 3+4=7, Diagnosis was made at time of RP.PSA after surgery 0.2, stayed that way for 4 months, was 0.3 last month, I will check it again in one month, if still rising will probably have radiation possibly with hormone therapy. Anyone have a similar experience?
Anyone with info on pomegranate juice, has it helped, how much do you take, and what product is the best, where to buy it?? This stuff is expensive!
Thanks, Gene

Gene, My Robotic surgery is in 4 days. I have stage T2B Gleason 7 but 4+3 cores.
When I found out about my PC I started drinking 1 eight ounce glass of Pomegranate juice daily and taking several vitamins that are suppose to help fight/kill cancer cells. Yes it is expensive stuff! I made sure and got 100% pure since some is water downed or mixed with other juices. I did this for about 2 months. I had my PSA retested and it had gone from 4.6 to 5.1. I reason in my mind "I wonder what it would have gone up to with out what I was doing". So I don't know for a fact if it helped or not. I then read about some pomentranite extract pills which our 100% pure and switched to those. I took those until one week ago since they recommended stopping any natural rememedies about 1 week before surgery.

After surgery I plan to start back on the pomengranite pills and other natural stuff. I figure since it has been shown to kill cancer then it can't hurt taken it. The pills helped ease the expensive of the liquid drink.

    Food Additives
    Aloha,
You are in a difficult position, There are no magic cures, pehaps prayer, additives or other food additives that have been tested that provide any protection against prostate cancer.
CancerCare.org has online councelers that you can talk to, ask questions, that help you make better decisions for living with your cancer.
The only diet that has scientific backing is the heart healthy diet.
It is easy to throw money at our personal sicknesses. I did. Food additives just do not work. It is also possible to ingest stuff you do not want and will do you harm.
There is a paper by Arnon Krongrad, MD that puts food additives into very clear prospective. As soon as I find it I will post it here.

    Arnon Krongrad, MD diet paper
Please do post the paper or a link to the paper. I looked for it with no sucess.

I sort agree with you about magic pills ( If the magic pill was there ,we would already know about it), but my Doctor did tell me to try Saw palmetto.." It can"t hurt" he said.

Who knows? Maybe, just maybe,a change in our diet or a certain additive will make a difference.

I went to capcure and I think they implied that .... 'eggs and the skin of a chicken leg'...may be a problem for prostate cancer folks like us.

Wishing all of you, good fortune...

I agree there are no magic
I agree there are no magic cures but I did find this article interesting.
    http://www.webmd.com/prostate-cancer/news/20090426/pomegranate-juice-may-slow-prostate-cancer

In a short summary the article stated:
April 26, 2009 -- Drinking 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily may slow the progression of localized prostate cancer ( prostate cancer that hasn't spread), a new study shows.

The study included 48 men who had surgery or radiation therapy to treat localized prostate cancer.

When the study started in 2003, the men's PSA levels were doubling every 15 months. In prostate cancer patients, PSA (prostate specific antigen) is used to monitor their cancer.

All of the men drank 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily, and that slowed down the time it took for their PSA levels to double,

Along with my radiation oncologist and medical oncologist I work with a practice that uses additional supportive treatments. They suggest lifestyle changes that may take some of the factors that supported cancer growth away. Regarding nutrition they definitely suggest getting meat and sugar out of your diet and eating more vegetables. There are two books I found most useful:
    Integrative Oncology Abrahams/Weil
    Life over Cancer Keith Block

There is some research support for Pomegranate Juice, as well as Soy protein, and antioxidants (fish oil, green tea), tomatoes and red wine. I am taking a number of supplements, none of my medical team are much in support of the supplements except for the practice that prescribed them. I feel that I can find nothing that suggests they would be a problem, so what is there to loose. It is an extra expense, it is a challange to eat well but seems a good investment at the moment.

    I wish you well.

    Hi Nick,

No hard data on this end- but I strongly believe that weight lifting is an excellent therapy- any type of exercise should be, I would think. I'm buying all the pomegranates in Riverside county this weekend (LOL). I've got two juicers- Champion and Jack La Lanne.

Doing one's own juicing reduces some of the cost and Jack LL claims that juices are most effective if you drink immediately.

I had to avoid the anti-oxidants during radiation (IMRT) treatments. I am going back into high gear now. The juicers are coming out of hibernation.

    Take care!

    Pomengranite Pills
Hi Larry, Thanks for your quick reply regarding the Pomengranite pill info. I was spending about $15.00/wk for the juice so this will really help pay for my Firmagon injection co-pays. :-)

Best wishes and keep the faith for your upcoming RP surgery and positive PSA results.

    OTC supplements
Finally found the web site that I was looking for:
    http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2008/03/death_by_supplements.php
If I might also suggest, that if you find on a web site, recommendations for taking supplements, check to see if the site is trying to sell you something. Any site recommendations that also try to sell you a product, should be suspicious & questionable.
