New Semi-Colon here!

I've actually been reading alot on here for the past week and have even given my "2 cents" but haven't introduced myself!
Was diaganosed last November. Had surgery (in February to remove about 12 inches of colon. That all went well..bowels back to normal. Stage 3 (2 lymph nodes out of 28). I feel lucky about that.
Will have my 5th treatment next week. Taking an IV for oxsliplatin and was doing 14 days of Xeloda..
Had to get off the Xeloda because my hands and feet were peeling to bad. They gave me the pump last week (for 2 days) and that wasn't bad! Actually I have been feeling so good that I went back to exercise these past few days!
Just wanted to tell you that because I was reading some of the side effects of the other people on here, I found out that my legs aching and just hurting are part of the side effects. I was questioning myself thinking it was because of my orthotics or didn't know what. Couldn't stand a long time with out sitting for awhile.
Anyway, I want to thank you all for the answer and I can accept that and go on!
I feel I have a good attitude and you can't let it get you down or you just can't spend your energy on dwelling about it. Must move on. learn to deal with side effects, etc.
I also think that it is harder for me to feel sick about it since I didn't feel that first thing prior to me knowing about the cancer.

I'm glad you found us and we could help with something. I found this site right after I got out of the hospital from my surgery. I didn't have much time to "absorb" the dx. I went in for colonoscopy on Dec. 19th thinking "ok, diverticulitis, colits..." and WHAM. Doctor told me that I had a tumor and believed it was cancerous. They wouldn't let me go home. I had the tumor out the next day which was my birthday. What a present! That was in 2005 and finished chemo July 2006 (about 1 year ago). Glad your chemo is going good except for the Xeloda.

It sounds like you have a great attitude. Keeping a positive attitude is one of the best things you can do to help yourself through the cancer journey.
Don't hesitate to ask questions. There are a bunch of us semi-colons out here and most likely one of us will be able to help with the answer. I'm glad they found a chemo combination that has you feeling better.

Welcome! Sounds like you are on the right track. Keep it up! (but if you have a bad day, it is all normal!) Continue exercising... it is my saving grace.
It is funny how different people are. I tolerate xeloda much better than the 5FU pump - but I am on a trial that requires the pump! Ugh.
I can tell you are such a blessing to this site! You give others hope, that's what we are here for.

Welcome. It sounds like you are doing well and you clearly have a good attitude (which is important).
Sorry the Xeloda caused problems, but glad the 5FU seems better. I took Xeloda with few side effects, but everyone is different and it is good that your oncologist is paying attention and adjusting your treatment.

Glad you are doing better. I actually do better on Xeloda than on the 5FU pump. I can deal with the sore feet and loss of toenails much better than I can deal with the nausea.....but everyone is affected differently.
Keep up the good attitude, keep believing. A wonderful friend gave me the bood "Love, Medicine and Miracles" by Bernie S. Siegel, M.D. It is good reading.

I didn't find this board till after my diagnosis/treatment was well underway.
It is MAJOR scary to try to fight this alone!!! From one who had "no one in the family" with cancer...
Think of us as an extended family...and there is probably over 100 years of experiences between all of us!

Sorry about your cancer diagnosis, but you have a great attitude and have just "met" a huge group of friends who will help you through. I don't know who said it, but somebody said "Attitude is everything." I know that even on the tough days, a positive outlook and the faith that you will be well will get you by. Thanks for your post. Know that your new friends are here for you to celebrate your victories and lift you up when you need support.

Hi Claudia, and welcome!
I'm a stage 4 survivor dx Aug 04 with liver mets (Details on website). Presently I'm halfway through a short program of Avastin,Irenotecan and xeloda to clean up a liver met after RFA.
There has been a lot of conversation about the comparative advantages of xeloda and the 5FU pump. A number of us have had both, with various side-effects and preferrences. I've handled both fairly well so far. I have a slight preferrence for the 5FU pump as it's shorter in duration. I find the 14 day xeloda regime spreads out the misery a little longer. It is sure nice that the choice is available to us. The more options the better.

Hi Claudia - Welcome! I love your attitude. You are my kind of gal! I'm 49 -- diagnosed age 44 with stage 3 rectal cancer. I've had a couple of recurrences but hanging in there and doing well. I liked to exercise (walking, yoga) during chemo when I felt up to it (usually in the second week). Helped my sanity and I'm sure also good for my health. My oncologist has a bias towards 5FU over Xeloda so I have only done 5FU combos (I adore my oncologist!). Just finished 6 mos of FOLFOX (= 5FU + Oxaliplatin) + Avastin.
