A Plan, of sorts

I have decided to start the chemo recommended by my oncologist-IFL (irinotecan, 5FU and leucovorin) with Avastin. From my reading, this seems like a pretty typical course of action. He's reluctant to go the oxaliplatin route-he's afraid i won't tolerate that too well. I called the oncologist office to arrange an appt to discuss IMRT with a radiation oncologist. He had offered this at the appt, even though he doesn't think it's an option, but i was not thinking too well then.

I want to get some sort of treatment going before our vacation. That's why i'm putting off the 2nd opinion. In the meantime I will work on a 2nd opinion for when i get back> The oncologist wants to go through 2 cycles (6 wks) and recheck my cat scan to see how the nodules are responding to treatment. Reevaluate then.

So that's the plan, so far.
Thanks for all your words of advise.

Mary

    Mary,
That sounds like a good plan. If I were you, I would definitely take the trip and drink lots of those drinks with little umbrellas in them. I would also get a second opinion from Dana Farber. They are one of the best cancer centers in the world. Maybe you could schedule the appt. before the trip and go after. I have heard that it can take a while to get an appt. there.

Good luck and enjoy the sun.

Maureen, I talked to my oncologist last night. Since your last post, Dana Farber has been my choice. When I told him I was going to be looking into a 2nd opinion, he gave me the name of 2 physicians at Dana Farber (before I even told him that's where I wanted to go). Apparently he trained under one of them and has worked with another one with some of his other patients. Must be the place for me!
    Thank you!

PS> Holding you in my thoughts for your upcoming surgery. I know you will do well and adapt to the changes that it will bring. Remember colostomies are supposed to be easier to deal with than ileostomies. You handled the ileostomy. You can do this!
