Hi semi-colons,

This is a continuation of my healing cancer with diet thread headed Juicing.

Many of you have emailed me about some specifics that I have done over the past three years to stay cancer free and not having done chemo. I have shared my vitamin and supplement lists, and Eastern healing practices such as acupuncture and massage and lymphatic drainage, but I haven't spoken much about the macrobiotics that I also implemented to some degree.

Macrobiotics have been known to cure cancer for 1/3 of the folks who do it. In a nutshell it is eating in balance as close to the center as possible---whole grains, veggies, fruit and a small amount of fish and poultry. It focuses on fermented foods such as miso (a fermented soy paste that you make into a broth) that was found to cleanse the body of radiation poisoning following WWII bombing of Japan. It helps to detox and move things along through the digestive process. It provieds good bacteria that helps enzymes.

It has been proven so effective that the Kushi Institute was given a grant to study why macrobiotics cure cancer. This is huge!! The "establishment" is finally acknowledging the power of a pure diet in curing cancer.

A wonderful book on the subject is:

The Cancer Pervention Diet by Muchio Kushi.

A personal testimony story is:

When Hope Never Dies by Marlene McKenna

(I think that is her last name--books are still packed away so i cannot check for sure right now).

Then today I received my latest issue of Alternative Medicine magazine and there is an article about a woman with Stage IV lung cancer that had spread all around her abdomen. One doctor gave her 2-6 weeks and another gave her at most 6 months. She is alive 9 years later!!

"....revealing three tumors in her left lung and seven in her right--and the disease had spread. Her liver housed three tumors, she had another in her pancreas, and yet another was causing her abdomen to swell."

She took one dose of chemo and lost 46 pounds and felt so ill that she stopped any chemo. It was her oncologist who suggested she try macrobiotics.

At the time of starting the program she was "....on oxygen, bald, my nails were blue, and my color was gray."

She ended up finding a macrobiotic counselor who helped her to learn the how-to.

As for me, I bought Kushi's book and implemented much of his philosophy. A friend would cook me a few macro meals a week and I made very simple ones like rice sushi and steamed veggies with brown rice, miso broth, etc. I bought a macro cookbook which I really like but the title has flown from my mind at the moment (dang). When I unpack it I'll add it the list.

Chinese Medicine is not a real big proponant of juicing because it is "cold and wet", but in my research I felt it was right for me so I combined the two.

I also kept track of my pH level daily. You can purchase a little roll of litmus paper that you pee on (or use your spit) and it will give you your pH level in seconds. It is very important to stay in a healthy alkaline state. Cancer loves an acid state and that comes from food far from center--such as meat and sugar and dairy. They are way too yin or yang.

Now if this all sounds too New Age or freaky for you just now that I am not a New Ager AT ALL!! It is just Eastern medicine rather than Western Medicine. It is a belief system based on the body's ability to heal itself when brought into balance.

In Western Medicine the body is really not expected to "heal" but the disease is managed by series of drugs. How often in Western Medicine do you hear your doctor trying to find the source of you anemia or does he just give you iron shots. When you have migraines are you tested for food allergies or are you, like me, put on drugs to try to supress the migraines; and how many, like me, still had migraines or worse..double vision?? When are we challenged to get off sugar or alcohol or dairy or processed foods and see if the headaches are cured? Well thank God my osteopath did just that and my migraines got better. the neurosurgeon was stumped when after he put me on drugs the migraines kept coming. He had no answers. My ostoepath did because he searched for the root cause.

I happen to like Western dignostics like colonoscopies, but I prefer Eastern Medicine for healing better. It's not an all or nothing proposition but a melding of the two---completing a circle from East to West. Each half is missing something when they ignore the other half.

So get out the tofu and toss out the cheese, replace your mashed potatoes with some brown rice, some miso instead of gravy and just see what can happen to your CEA or your tumors or whatever.

When it's your life what do you have to lose by trying?

peace, emily who will be having sushi and wasabi tonight and thinking of you all

Thank you, Emily, for your care, concern, and informative posts. What is your opinion of low sugar yogurt? I've read where dairy is discouraged, but also read where yogurt is good for our digestive system.

I so appreciate your sharing your knowledge and research with us.

    Hugs,

    Kay

    Hi Kay,

Personally I do not dairy whatsoever (migraines) but if you were to do any yogurt I would recommend organic and free of ANY sugar. Your taste buds will change and improve when you move away from sugared foods. I promise. I was a sugar-aholic believe me. But when my osteopath found me to be hypoglycemic he took me off of all refined sugars, processed foods, white flours and grains, alcohol, caffeine, birth control pills and dairy.

Yogurt, being fermented, is supposed to be very healthy. I forget where Kushi stands on this b'c I don't pay attention to the dairy stuff since it is a non issue for me. But when I unpack my books I will look it up.

I know in the whole foods organic world yogurt is looked upon favorably....fermentation being the key reason....and live bacteria in the form of acidolpholus.

    Does this help?

peace, emily who is a reformed junkfood junkie lush who had to doctor her hangovers with Coca-Cola most Saturday mornings....haha! My how times have changed! :-)

hello Emily! I read all these post everyday not because I have colon cancer but my mom dies at the age of 46 of it. I am 30 so yes it is something I have to watch. I was just fixing to get my first colonoscopy and found out I was pregnant so it will have to wait 9 months :) I watch myself VERY closely. It is something I worry about alot but I have decided I will not let it run my life. I think you are a real inspiration to any and congratulations on the 3 year mark. My problem is that I have alot of good intentions when it comes to food but never go through with them. I too have the Prescription for Nutritional Healing Book(which is wonderful) and 2 of Michio Kushi books but I want to gag just looking through them :) I live on Curezone! How do you stop eating sugar? I have tried Stevia but do not like it. I am not one who eats alot of processed foods but I like my chicken and fish and veggies and fruits. Have you read The Maker's Diet by Jordon Rubin? That is alot like me. I could follow that. What are you thought's on it. Also, one more thing, have you ever tried the Liver/gallbladder flush on curezone? if so, how was it? I am too chicken!:) Well I know it was alot of questions but just curious! Have a great one, Danielle

    Hello (all)
Well, I just spoke with a (pancreatic) cancer patient's wife here at work whose husband is being treated in Greensboro, NC. They told him to stay away from refined sugar and that it feeds the cancer.

He is doing well and surviving long after he is supposed to. He's had a lot of chemo but is clean now and it's been going on 3 years.

Now I've seen this issue here posted by Emily. I've seen this on Dr. Mercola's site and other sites ...and now I finally hear of a cancer center giving this advice--to stay away from refined sugar.

I wish my husband would listen. I don't sleep at night after watching him eat pie and ice cream for supper. Of course the docs tell him to eat anything he wants to keep up his 'calories'. They also tell him to eat lots of protein but I think he only heard the sugar part.

(Emily, I sent him your advice about all that and he looked at the email....maybe he'll listen to you..I do hope so)

    Hmmmm.... Let's see:

Fermented foods/whole grains - Sake! Fermented rice wine (rice, of course, being a whole grain)

Veggies - like potatos - hmmm... isn't vodka made from FERMENTED potatos? PERFECT! And what goes best in that vodka martini? A big, fat olive! (more veggies)

fruit? Again, fermented fruit??? Hmmm... WINE!

So, a diet consisting of a little bit of fish/poultry and lots of sake, vodka martinis, and wine. WHERE CAN I SIGN-UP!? Move over Dr. Atkins!!

    Cheers...

    - SB (who is an absolute sushi addict!)

    Hi Danielle!

I have heard of Rubin's book but have yet to read it. I use his products and LOVE them. I trust his knowledge alot. I am assuming that his is a diet of heavy on the raw foods? Educate me. I know his diet program has been successful too. Macro is only one kind of pure diet. It worked from me and others. You gotta choose what's right for you as long as it's pure and full of veggies, whole grains and fruits.

At this point I eat some organic meat.

I have done a liver cleanse (ReNew Life) but have yet to do the liver/gallbladder flush. My hubby did it a few years ago and got those stone they talk about. It was wild.

Find what works for you and what you will do. For me all raw foods did not appeal to me so I know I would have struggled. But combining juicing and macro worked great.

I love curezone! But my time is limited and when I am online for my short bursts I am usually here. At the beginning when I was heavy into research I lived on curezone!

22 years ago when I got off refined sugar I was incredibly motivated by the painful migraines I had. I dropped out of universtiy they were so bad (and went back when I had it under control after changing my diet). So after my sister literally had to drag me off a pan of brownies one night I eventually quit craving the sugar. Now that does not mean I do not want "sweet". I get it from frozen grapes, or raw honey on occasion or fruit spreads. The whey powder I put into my blueberry smoothies every morning has stevia in it and it gives me the sweet our tastebuds want.

    Does this help?

peace, emily who has yet to figure out the proper stevia proportions in cooking.....

    Hi Chris,

    @#*!

I also increased my protein through protein powders. Then you aren't getting the acid forming meat. You can also get complete proteins by combining grains...beans and brown rice...a burrito with soycheese! YUM!

This is where a professional Naturopathic doc would come in handy. Let's pray your hubby will be open to changing his ways.

Emily, basically the Makers diet sticks to things that come naturally, non- processed, non-sugar foods. Clean meats such as the meat of animals with a cloven or split hoof that chew the cud. And it says do not eat swine. (I have to say I love a good pork roast:). You can eat any fish with fins and scales. It contains no refined or processed foods and only a very small amount of healthy sweeteners, durn! And the meat you eat should be only organic. Which is a hard thing to find around here. So basically to sum it up it calls for plentiful amounts of healthy meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, dairy, grain, nuts and seeds. But it has sooooooo much more in it I could not even begin to explain. You should read it! :) Danielle

    Hey Emily,

Some progress is being made, albeit slow and not complete. We're on enzymes now! The dietician sent us some excellent articles on enzymes and how they can be used as a digestive aid in cancer and also a therapy.

Am trying to push the protein powders and still pushing getting off the sugar....am not giving up!
Here is a good explanation of why refined sugar (not speaking of natural sugars in fruits, etc.) is not a good idea: http://www.mercola.com/2000/oct/8/sugar_cancer.htm
And here is another article of interest off the same site:
    http://www.mercola.com/2001/jun/13/methylglyoxal.htm
I too love the www.curezone.com site and spend much time on it--good since I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Your suggestions Emily have helped me and my husband!

    Thanks (as ever)!

    Yogurt and dairy prodcts
Kay, my wife has colorectal cancer, and has had 25 radiology treatments and 10 days of chemo. she went through diarrhea and constant vomiting for more than two weeks while getting the treatments. She's lactose intolerant, but has found that yogurt doesn't bother her stomach very much. We discovered Lactaid (non-fat) here in the Publix supermarkets, and she now drinks that. They also sell Lactaid Non-Milk ice cream, which really tastes very good. The ice cream comes in three or four flavors. I think you and other survivors should know about those products. Oh, also look for Tofutti ice cream; it's also a non-milk ice cream.
    Good luck to you.
