Survivors who had children?

Hi all-

I had a laparotomy six weeks ago to remove my Stage I ovarian cancer. I had my right ovary and tube removed, but they were able to leave everything else. They did extensive staging, and everything else came back just fine. Because they caught it so early I do not need to have any further treatment right now.

My husband and I were trying to get pregnant when the cancer was discovered, and my doctor has encouraged me to try to get pregnant as soon as possible, since the chance of reoccurance in the other ovary is pretty high. There may be some scar tissue, which could make getting pregnant a little tricky.

Have any of you gotten pregnant after your cancer treatment? I'm just looking for any bit of hope I can find! Thanks!

    Hello,

I'm sorry to hear of your dx, but so happy that it was caught so early! Mine, too, was caught at Stage One. I initially just had the cancerous ovary and tube removed -- I was getting married two months after surgery and hadn't yet decided on kids. I did decide to do chemo -- 6 rounds -- on the advice of my gyne oncologist who told me to think of it as an "insurance policy." I'm glad I did it, though it meant postponing my wedding, losing my hair, etc. The piece of mind really helped.

About 9 months after finishing chemo,I had a complete hysterectomy. I just did not want to have the worry that my cancer would come back. I had everything taken out in July 2002 and have been fine since. I feel really good about my decision, which I know would not be for everyone. I just felt that I wanted to use all available tools, resources and treatments to ensure (as much as you ever can!) that I remained cancer free for the rest of my life. It will be 3 years next month and neither my husband nor I regret our decisions not to have our own children. I'm the step Mom of a wonderful 16 year old daughter and that is enough for me!

I'm sure there are many women who go on to have children after a dx of ovarian cancer. In the end, you have to do what's right for you.

    Good luck!
