radical surgery for newly diagnosed prostate cancer

In your research, is the cure rate the same for radical surgery for prostate cancer, psa 4.5, gleason 6, unilateral, as radiation therapy? Am very confused. Husband is in good health, no heart problems, diabetes or high blood pressure. What is incontinence level afterwards?

    Hi, others can maybe answer this better than I; however I feel free to make a comment. I am a 69 year old person who underwent brachytherapy for the very reason you ask the question about incontinence. I know many who underwent RP, most are incontinent and now reside in nursing homes. I do not know the percent that result in incontinence but do know that most underwent the surgery locally either by a physician or urologist. I would suggest that you research the proceedure very throughly, it is NOT a piece of cake. Talk to men and their wives about what they have and are going thru. For a favorable patient such as you the breakdown for surgery and radiation from research give very similar results. I do not regret my very personal choice.     I'm in about the same position as your husband. Have seen surgeon and "SEED GUY"! Seed guy said based on my case (Age 56 in good health :), PSA 3.4, Gleason 3+3=6, 2out of6 cores positive---1@5% & 1@10%) my best chance of cure...long term would be surgery! Seems strange coming from him! All treatments have a downside (nothing is easy)! It is'nt an easy choice! Pick up Dr. Patrick Walsh's book, GUIDE TO SURVIVING PROSTATE CANCER....it may help!     I had the surgery and the radiation, so I can't say which is best. If I had to do it over again, I would do it just like I did. I have been free of cancer for nearly 3 years. If you would like more information you can email me. meadc
