Has anyone taken this drug? Does it work? What are the side effects?

I think according to the studies it prolongs life for 1.8 months on average. My oncologist told me he had very bad experience with this drug in his patients. A lot of side effects but no good results at all. Butt.

Stavarga was very harsh for my wife, chills, fever, nausea. She almost made it through the first cycle. It really kicked her but. Sorry I can't be more positive. - Mitch

Thanks for the input. I think I might ask him why he is choosing this drug for me. You mentioned chills. I got rigors on oxaliplatin so bad that they had to give me demerol to stop it. Not wanting to deal with that again.

I just realized you said she didn't even make it through the first round.

That's right, she was supposed to take one tab per day for 21 days, then 7 off. She couldn't even walk after 19 days. After she recovered enough for a dr visit, she told them, no more of that! That was in January. She has tried everything they offered, with only a little help. She has declined any more treatment. We are doing everything we can to keep her comfortable. She sleeps good, and when she's awake, we enjoy each others company. Sadly, I've spent the morning contacting hospice organizations for the near future. Her oncologist at MD Anderson told us, most people tolerate Stivarga well. Just not my wife. - Mitch

sorry to hear that. It is sad that none of the colon cancer drugs helped her. I didn't even see that not being able to walk was a Stivarga side effect. How sad.

Thanks for all this info...I'm glad I listened to my inner fears and anxieties after reading all the BLACK BOX warnings! This post makes me so glad I did not even try it. So my doc has scheduled me to start some 5FU and I don't know what all.

Again thanks.

What did your doctor say when you said no to it?  Did he say why he wanted you to try it? I went in prepared to ask side effects for whatever drug he suggested,  but something else happened that made me forget.

Mom went on Stivarga for 2 cycles (not complete), had hand/foot syndrome and the CT scan showed size increase of the liver tumors.  Now we're trying Afinitor (everolimus) which is actually made for breast cancer but it shows that it targets a specific mutation that mom has.  So hopefully it works.
