Kidney cancer that possibly has spread to bone

Hello everyone. I was here before at the same time last year because my husband was newly diagnosed with RCC. He had surgery in January of 2017 and had the whole kidney removed. He was diagnoased as stage 3 aggressive rcc. His scan in April and August was fine. we just went in for scan number 3 and they found a lesion on his vertabrae in his back. In October he injured his back and had to stay home for a bit but is now doing better and it happens to be that same spot. Could it be just an injury? We don't see the oncologist again until Wednesday afternoon and then we get a biopsy and figure out a plan. I guess I have a few questions...has anyone else else had kidney cancer spread to the bone? What can I expect is this is indeed cancer? I know I shouldn't obsess and worry without more information, and i'm trying to be the rock that he needs me to be...but I need some positive news. Stories of survival, hope, and longevity. Anyone?

Yeah, I got in the bones.  My stage IV diagnosis 4 years ago started off with the discovery of a painful lesion on my humerus. 'Looked like my arm was about to fall off.  But it's back to normal now after radiation and Xgeva shots.  This year we've discovered lesions on my spine that we've treated with radiation.  Ain't no big thing.  No worries here.

Thank you rhominator. That helps...we get the biopsy on Friday, and results after christmas. I'm just hoping for good news and if it's not good news that this can be treated. The Xray showed a lytic lesion to the L4 vertebrae...not sure what that means...but in the meantime the waiting is torture

Remember things are kind of relative. I have a lot of them but they are relatively stable. I'm lucky because I respond to all my treatments. Cabo, zometa, oxies, radiation, and pot.

I'm like a teenagers acne face. Some improve, some grow some go away. However the kid still has a zit face. That's like me and my tumors.

Again, radiation has stopped most in their tracks. The best part is when I get tumor flares. Everywhere I've had tumors hurts. They zap bothersome tumors and it is like all of them have a response. Pain goes away and I'm good to go another 6 months.

We got a second opinion yesterday. This oncologist suggested getting the PET scan first before we proceed with the biopsy, so we are scheduled for a pet scan next week. He said it was a weird spot for it to migrate to, but it was possible. He then said that if the scan came back suspicious we would do the biopsy, but that he wanted to see a scan of the whole body first. He did ease our minds a bit stating that if it did come back as cancer it can be treated and managed. We are just hoping that it's not and that if it is...it's only in that one spot. The waiting and the unknown continue...**sigh**

HiAll, new to the network.  Diagnosed with RCC found in my shoulder and scanned to find a 6 lb tumor on my kidney that was removed in Sep 2016.  Began Votrient treatment for 1st few monhs then went to nivoumab after signs of growth in lungs  & lymph nodes found in CT scans.  Contined treatment for another couple months and found other growths with some in check.  Switched to Sutent for another couple months and began experiencing back pain over Thanksgiving which through MRi discovered growths in Spine T-2 to T5 & near spine at T-12-T15.  Had PET/CT scan which also showed growh in pelvic area.

Began radiation treatments on spine which relievedthe pain  Had consultation with my oncologist at Abington and 2nd opionion at Columbia who consulted on my next phase of treatment which will be the ipi/nivo combo that I will start this Friday 12/29.  We have agreed to continue with PET/CT scans  in future checkups as the course we were taking with MRI's/CT's of affected areas did not show the new spread FYI.

Have to keep the faith and keep fighting.  Good luck to all.

Welcome to the network.  I hope the ipilimumab (Yervoy) and nivolumab (Opdivo) combo works for you!  We look forward to hearing the results.

she was just diagnosed a month ago , thought it was sciatica / slipped disc. She just had her L5 removed with tumor and will start CyberKnife radiation to the rest of spine ,only 3 treatments needed , on Jan 10 . I‘ve researched and cyberknife seems to have a good success rate.  I will update once she has the treatment . We haven’t even started on the kidney treatment yet , she could barely walk so this was priority.

Wish you the best !
